McLaren’s 2024 F1 Surge: Piastri and Norris Shine Amidst Tight Competition
Oscar Piastri: 'Even if McLaren has the fastest F1 car in 2024, it won't be by a large margin'
"I believe it's among the fastest"
Oscar Piastri believes that even if the McLaren Formula 1 team possesses the fastest car in the 2024 season, the advantage is minimal.
McLaren holds the second spot in the constructors' standings halfway through the 2024 season, with Lando Norris and Piastri both having secured grand prix victories.
In a closely contested race for the top spot, Red Bull is ahead with 408 points, maintaining a 42-point lead over McLaren, while Ferrari holds third place with 345 points.
As the summer break approaches, victories have been shared among Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes, with the latter experiencing a notable improvement in performance recently.
Speaking after the Belgian Grand Prix, where Piastri secured third place and Norris finished fifth, the Australian driver expressed his belief that the McLaren car is currently among the top vehicles, though only marginally so.
"I believe it's among the fastest," Piastri told Sky Sports F1.
"In Budapest, I believe we had the fastest performance. However, here at Spa, I made several errors during qualifying, which ultimately hurt our results."
"However, the margin is extremely narrow. Even if we are the fastest, the difference is minimal."
"Red Bull showed impressive speed this weekend at Spa, but Max Verstappen faced difficulties due to the turbulent air. Additionally, Mercedes demonstrated considerable strength."
"We might have had a slight advantage, but we didn't have the right positioning on the track to make the most of it."
At the mid-season pause, Norris holds the second position in the drivers' standings, trailing the current world champion Verstappen by 78 points.
Although satisfied with the team's efforts, Norris lamented his errors this season, which have caused him to miss several valuable scoring chances.
“From the perspective of the team, I’m extremely pleased,” he commented.
“In recent races, I believe I've made several mistakes and lost a significant number of points. I need to take a break to regroup and return with renewed strength.”
The 2024 season is the first time since 2012 that McLaren has achieved grand prix victories with both of its drivers. Piastri's win at the Hungarian Grand Prix was just the third Sunday race win for the team since the conclusion of the 2012 season.
