McLaren Greenlights Piastri-Norris Duel at Dutch GP Amid Championship Stakes
"The guidelines are explicit" – Oscar Piastri permitted to compete against Lando Norris in Dutch Grand Prix
Oscar Piastri has the green light to compete with Lando Norris at the Dutch Grand Prix, according to Connor McDonagh reporting from Zandvoort.
Oscar Piastri has announced that he remains "free to race" against his McLaren F1 teammate Lando Norris at the Dutch Grand Prix.
Norris remains in the running for this year’s F1 drivers' championship, though he is 78 points behind Max Verstappen.
Considering McLaren's recent surge in speed compared to Red Bull in the latest races, Verstappen's lead is not unbeatable. However, Norris will need to capitalize on every chance to close the gap.
McLaren became entangled in a controversy over team orders during the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Piastri took the lead from Norris during the first lap and maintained it for most of the race. However, he lost his position during the pit stops as McLaren responded to an undercut strategy from behind.
This gave Norris the lead, but McLaren instructed him to let someone else pass. After persistent pleas from his race engineer, Will Joseph, Norris finally complied.
During a press conference held by the FIA, which included media representatives from Crash.net, Piastri emphasized that the 'rules remain unchanged'.
“The regulations are extremely straightforward and remain unchanged,” he stated. “Additionally, we have the liberty to compete against each other to strive for victory.”
"Naturally, we are competing for the Constructors' Championship, and we are aware of the significant implications for our team. However, we have repeatedly demonstrated our ability to compete against each other fairly and respectfully."
"Absolutely, we are permitted to compete and aim for victory in the race. That remains the same."
Norris mentioned, "We have the freedom to compete. The only guideline we've ever had is to avoid colliding with each other. That's the sole rule."
“Other than that, we’ve consistently had the freedom to compete. We’ve performed admirably in previous races. So everything is positive on our end.”
