2016 Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg returned to the circuit in Berlin on Saturday, where he showcased the new 'Gen2' Formula E car during a demo drive. This car will debut in the series starting with its fifth season.

Rosberg emphasized that he had no intentions of making a comeback to motorsport following his retirement announcement, which came shortly after his F1 championship victory in Abu Dhabi. Pascal Wehrlein disqualified from leading position in Paris Formula E race, both Mahindra vehicles fail to meet tyre pressure standards

Pascal Wehrlein has lost his pole position for the Formula E event in Paris on Saturday, following a ruling that both vehicles from the Mahindra team did not maintain the necessary tyre pressure minimum.

Wehrlein managed to surpass Nissan's Oliver Rowland, securing his second Formula E pole position at the Les Invalides circuit in Paris on a Saturday afternoon. However, due to a rule violation, he will start the race from the back of the grid.

Jerome d'Ambrosio, another team member who had secured the sixth position in qualifying, will also be moved to the back of the pack due to the violation.

Pascal Wehrlein has lost his pole position spot for the upcoming Formula E race in Paris on Saturday due to both Mahindra vehicles being found to have operated with tyre pressures below the mandated minimum level.

Wehrlein secured his second Formula E pole position at the Les Invalides circuit in Paris on a Saturday afternoon, surpassing Nissan's Oliver Rowland. However, due to a violation, he will be relegated to the back of the grid.

Jerome d'Ambrosio, who had secured the sixth position in the qualifiers, will also be relegated to the back of the pack due to the infraction.

This elevates Rowland to the top spot, while his Nissan colleague Sebastien Buemi secures a position next to him at the forefront of the starting lineup.

Valencia is set to welcome its inaugural E-Prix in April, as the Formula E world championship unveils its upcoming series of races for the 2021 season.

Due to the swift proliferation of a new COVID-19 strain, FE had to modify its season seven schedule, as the dual-event in Santiago scheduled for December was delayed.

The fully electric racing series has confirmed that its two nighttime races in Saudi Arabia will proceed as scheduled at the end of next month. The opening races of the season are set for the 26th and 27th of February.

On Thursday, Formula E unveiled the upcoming series of seven races, which includes the inaugural competitive event in Valencia and the rearranged back-to-back races in Chile.

After a pause in the racing schedule during March, the 2021 season is set to resume with the Rome E-Prix on April 10, marking Italy's comeback to the series for the first time since 2019. Subsequently, Valencia will host its inaugural E-Prix on April 24.

The Ricardo Tormo Circuit has been the venue for pre-season trials over the last three years, yet the inaugural competitive event in Spain will occur on a newly designed track layout specifically for Formula E. This marks the first occasion in the series' history that it will compete on a fixed circuit.

Despite apprehensions about the feasibility of conducting the Monaco E-Prix during the ongoing health crisis, the fourth iteration of the biennial event in the Principality has received approval to proceed on May 8. This decision revitalizes the prospect of hosting the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix later in the month.

FE is set to travel to Morocco for its fifth Marrakesh E-Prix event scheduled for May 22, followed by the seventh and eighth rounds in Santiago on June 5-6.

The Sanya and the first-ever Seoul E-Prix races have been delayed, with a conclusive verdict on both races expected to be made upon the release of the rest of the season's schedule in early spring.

FE announced that it will keep a close eye on the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and maintain steady dialogue with its network of teams, manufacturers, partners, broadcasters, and host cities.

Any changes to the calendar are contingent upon travel limitations, guidelines set by local authorities, and must receive the green light from the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

Formula E in São Paulo: An Overview of the Qualifying Groups

The excitement is back as Formula E kicks off Season 11 at full throttle. The action begins with the initial qualifying session scheduled for early Saturday afternoon at 13:40 CET. So far, both Stoffel Vandoorne and Pascal Wehrlein have claimed pole positions in Brazil. To reach the top spot again, they first need to navigate through the group stage. Our summary provides details on which drivers compete in each group.

In the time trial, the drivers initially compete in two separate groups. Typically, Formula E organizes these groups for the race based on the current world championship standings. However, since Sao Paulo marks the beginning of the eleventh Formula E season, teams are allowed to place one driver in Group A and another in Group B. Based on this rule, the qualifying groups for Sao Paulo on Saturday are determined as follows.

Drivers who hold odd-numbered positions in the championship standings will begin in Group A, while those on even-numbered positions will start in Group B. The aim for each driver is to secure a spot in the top four of their respective group, as this is the only way to advance to the knockout stage. In the knockout stage, pairs of drivers compete against each other in the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals, battling for pole position and the first three championship points.

"Was in the Perfect Position!" – Oliver Rowland Discusses How Nissan Penalties Cost Him the Formula E Victory

The Formula E race on Saturday in Sao Paulo turned into a massive disarray. There were numerous crashes, and many penalties were handed out, with Nissan accumulating the most. Every driver from both the Nissan factory team and McLaren, Nissan's customer team, received a drive-through penalty. The infraction was technical, related to "power overuse." This was particularly disappointing for Oliver Rowland, who had been a strong contender for victory for much of the race.

The term "power overuse" simply refers to the temporary drawing of excessive power from the battery. Nissan team principal Tommaso Volpe has now confirmed to The Race where the issue originated: "The problem was with the control systems during the start procedure. We will urgently review this next week to ensure that penalties are avoided in the future."

Rowland had control of the race

Rowland, who began the race from second position and demonstrated exceptional performance throughout the weekend, was the only Nissan driver not penalized at the start. This was likely due to his favorable starting position, which allowed him to avoid reaching the critical speed threshold before the first turn. The British driver took the lead at the start and maintained dominance over the race thereafter.

He was able to save his Attack Mode for a longer period than the other drivers in the leading pack. Rowland was confident of his victory, stating, "I was ideally placed to pull away and nearly finish the race with the second Attack Mode." However, issues arose during the first activation: With nearly four minutes of Attack Mode remaining, Jake Dennis's exit led to a red flag, causing Rowland to lose his advantage.

His chances of winning were completely destroyed with the restart. Once again, he had a strong start and reclaimed the lead. However, his start was almost too strong: "During the second start, I held the throttle longer and battled with Antonio (Felix da Costa) until the first corner, and I encountered the same issue as the other Nissans." Consequently, he was penalized for "power overuse" and dropped to the last position.

Penalties Turn into Advantage for McLaren

In the initial stage of the race, Taylor Barnard and Sam Bird both received and served their penalties. The two red flag periods gave them an energy advantage, allowing them to conserve their Attack Mode for longer. Ultimately, this strategy paid off as Barnard secured his first podium finish with a third-place result, and Bird finished just behind him in fourth. With a total of 27 points, McLaren now leads the team standings!

Addressing the issue is, of course, a top priority for McLaren. Team principal Ian James states, "These matters are incredibly complicated, and naturally, you want to extract the best possible performance, so there's a tendency to push things to the limit. However, we should avoid ending up in a situation like today." According to James, McLaren is committed to fully supporting Nissan in resolving the problem.

Setting aside the penalties, Nissan appears more robust than ever, and the overall mood is positive. James is confident: "If we can solve the problems, the package Nissan provides looks impressive!" We'll find out if it leads to victory in Mexico. The second race of the season is scheduled there for January 11, 2025.

"Never imagined dynamics would change like this" – Is Formula E's new all-wheel-drive attack mode too intense?

Mitch Evans admitted, "It opened our eyes to how far we could advance," after he clinched victory at the season opener in Sao Paulo, starting from the very last position on the grid—a feat never before seen in Formula E! A key factor in his triumph was the clever use of Attack Mode, which has become a game-changer due to the introduction of new all-wheel-drive technology. Has Formula E made a strategic misstep?

Over the last two years, the Attack Mode has almost become irrelevant. Drivers and teams often referred to it as an "annoying obligation" because the Gen3 car was unable to translate the additional 50 kW power into real performance on the track. As a result, the gap between the race mode at 300 kW and the Attack Mode at 350 kW was barely noticeable.

The Formula E series has upgraded its technology with the introduction of the new Gen3-Evo car. With the addition of all-wheel drive in Attack Mode and softer Hankook tires that provide better grip, the distinction in performance is once more evident—and significantly so! "Even if you're a few seconds behind, you can make up for it in just three or four turns. That's how substantial the speed advantage is!" explains Antonio Felix da Costa.

The driver of the Porsche, who finished second in the Sao Paulo E-Prix, shared his viewpoint: "We consistently remained in the top four, but when the first Attack Mode phase started, I think I dropped out of the top ten because others in Attack Mode simply overtook me. I need to analyze this in more detail now."

Evans: "No Previous Experience with Such a Contrast"

Even race winner Evans acknowledges: "None of us had any prior experience with such a contrast in the race. We first had to learn how to handle this new Attack Mode. However, the team guided me well through it. It was an eye-opener for us, seeing how far we could advance with it."

Even though Porsche had prepared for this exact scenario, Felix da Costa admits, "We had to do a lot of improvising and adapting." Reflecting on his first race with all-wheel drive, he notes, "You have to be smart about how you use it and make sure you don’t get stuck behind someone you aren’t directly competing against. Patience is key: the moment will come when you can activate it yourself."

Hui: "Crucial in Every Race This Season"

Dan Ticktum acknowledges: "With the all-wheel drive, the Attack Mode has become extremely powerful." Alex Hui, his team principal at Cupra Kiro, elaborates: "The new all-wheel drive in Formula E has completely transformed how the Attack Mode is used."

Hui is confident that the introduction of Hankook's new softer tires over the weekend has added an extra strategic layer, which will be crucial in every race this season.

Opinion by Timo Pape: Better to be on the offensive than to let others pass

"I anticipated that the dynamics of the race would shift, but I never imagined they would change to such an extent," says Felix da Costa. He is not alone in this sentiment. In recent months, there has been much discussion about the new Pit-Boost and the potential impact of fast-charging pit stops on the races. However, few have talked about the Attack-Mode, and certainly not with any concern.

Following the Sao Paulo E-Prix, there is a growing concern about whether the new Attack Mode might be overly powerful. Indeed, it became even more challenging for fans to discern which drivers were genuinely vying for victory. This issue of clarity had already been a significant criticism during the initial two years of the Gen3 series, often referred to in discussions about the "slipstream battles." Interestingly, the slipstream effect did not play a role on Saturday, despite the Sao Paulo circuit, with its long straights, being an ideal setting for it.

The nature of the track made it relatively easy for drivers in Attack Mode to execute overtakes. However, upcoming races will feature much tighter circuits, such as the next event in Mexico, where overtaking might prove challenging even with all-wheel drive. In those instances, the drivers' overtaking skills could become even more crucial.

It's also true that the Attack Mode now truly lives up to its name. It's meant for offensive maneuvers and actually reminded me of the iconic star in Mario Kart, especially since the car's LEDs now flash pink and light blue when activated. Perhaps reducing the contrast a bit might provide clearer visibility. However, these subtle details are difficult to manage when considering the long-term development of tires.

A potential short-term solution might involve boosting performance in race mode to reduce the gap compared to all-wheel drive systems, though this could lead to other consequences. However, is this something anyone wants? Let's first observe how significant the difference is on other tracks. I'm trying to view the situation like pit stops in Formula 1, where shifts in the lineup also occur. Yet, dedicated fans can still keep track of who is genuinely competing for the win.

In Formula E, each driver is allowed two activations during a much shorter race. Is it possible to manage this potential chaos to some extent? One option might be to implement fixed windows for activating the Attack Mode, which would require all drivers to activate within those periods. It is also expected that teams will start saving their second Attack Mode activation until the end of the race, as demonstrated by Jaguar and McLaren on Saturday. However, if all drivers have the same amount of power again, their ability to launch attacks would be limited.

The revamped Attack Mode has introduced a new layer of strategy to Formula E that many have underestimated. It has led to numerous overtaking maneuvers, which I personally preferred over the "waving by" style of the past two seasons, as these moves originated from the attacker. In that sense, I'm feeling optimistic and hopeful that the chaos in upcoming races will be somewhat reduced. The only remaining question is how the powerful Attack Mode will work in conjunction with the Pit-Boost, which will be implemented starting with the Jeddah E-Prix…

"Never thought I'd be in this position" – Taylor Barnard unexpectedly becomes the youngest podium finisher in Formula E

In a surprising turn of events, Taylor Barnard finished his inaugural Formula E race as a full-time driver for McLaren in third place, despite being lapped at one point. This achievement made Barnard the youngest driver ever to stand on a Formula E podium, a feat he found hard to believe. At 20 years and 189 days old, he surpassed Daniel Abt, who had held the record since the Miami E-Prix in 2015 as the youngest podium finisher.

Barnard, visibly shaken shortly after the race, expressed his surprise at finding himself in this position. "I never expected to be standing here – that's for sure. I had to get the front wing changed and served a drive-through penalty… I really have no idea what to say," he remarked.

The 20-year-old began the race from the 17th position and faced setbacks early on during the competition. "During the initial 15 laps, I was in last place, but the red flags gave us a chance to get back into the race. We were at the very back and were naturally hoping for a safety car."

Barnard not only sustained damage to the front of his vehicle but also received a drive-through penalty for "power overuse," just like all four Nissan cars. Due to a software error, his car drew too much power. As a result, he dropped out of the lead lap but, like his teammate Sam Bird, was allowed to unlap himself.

With an Energy Advantage and Attack Mode to the Podium

"Due to the drive-through penalty, we had more time and were able to conserve a lot of energy," Barnard explains. Following Pascal Wehrlein's flip and the resulting second red flag period, the two McLaren drivers found themselves with a distinct energy advantage over their competitors and an extra Attack Mode in reserve.

Barnard noted, "The timing of the second Attack Mode was ideal for gaining positions." He praised the team, saying, "They did an outstanding job with the strategy. We executed it very well towards the end of the race. I can hardly describe what happened – it was simply incredible!"

Due to the energy advantage, some McLaren fans might have held onto hopes for a victory. However, Barnard doubted that any more could have been achieved. "Honestly, no. I tried everything to improve my position further, but it just wasn't feasible. I was constrained by temperature and tire grip."

Instead, he emphasizes the contribution of his teammate Bird, who finished the race in fourth place behind him: "In the end, Sam helped me secure this third-place finish. He didn't have to do that, so I'm really grateful to him. Having him by my side with all his experience is amazing."
