Max Verstappen to Mercedes: Persistent Rumours and Red Bull’s Recent Struggles Ignite Speculation
Speculation about Max Verstappen potentially moving to Mercedes continues to circulate, with the possibility still alive.
According to David Croft from Sky, speculation about Max Verstappen moving to Mercedes reemerged over the Monaco Grand Prix F1 weekend.
Speculation about Verstappen joining Mercedes has been a frequent topic amid the chaos at Red Bull this year.
The incident began over the weekend of the Bahrain Grand Prix, amid the controversy involving Christian Horner and the inquiry into his purported misconduct.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has openly expressed his interest in Verstappen, while the entire team is excitedly promoting their anticipated competitiveness under the new regulations set to take effect in 2026.
During the most recent episode of the Sky F1 podcast, Croft mentioned that Jos Verstappen, Max Verstappen's father, showing up has fueled additional speculation regarding a potential transfer.
"Let's return to the topic of Monaco, where speculation about Verstappen moving to Mercedes resurfaced," Croft remarked. "I'm uncertain what shifted between the season's first race and the Monaco event that caused the rumors to die down temporarily. However, it's possible that someone close to Max Verstappen, who hadn't been seen at the track for some time, attended the Monaco race, reigniting the speculation. I won't name anyone, but that's when the rumors picked up again."
Croft asserted that during the Monaco weekend, he received several text messages suggesting that the possibility of Verstappen moving to Mercedes is still alive.
During the Monaco weekend, I received several fascinating text messages from individuals who had listened to Jos speaking. They mentioned that the possibility of Max moving to Mercedes is still very much alive.
"It's evident that there are still some issues that need to be addressed in that discussion."
"Rationally, Max should remain in his current position. However, when has rationality ever been a factor in this debate? Particularly in Formula 1."
Regarding Red Bull's recent performance on the track, they have not secured victory in two out of the last three races.
Despite being at the top of both championships, their advantage has been greatly reduced because of difficulties on uneven street tracks.
Sky's Simon Lazenby believes that Red Bull's recent decline in performance creates an unstable situation for the team.
"For Red Bull, this is the most unstable situation they've faced in years, right? If you're attempting to retain your star driver and suddenly it seems there's an inherent issue that can't be fixed with adjustments, which is the case with the RB20," Lazenby commented.
"They're doing well, monitoring the engine project closely to understand its progress. Toto is diligently overseeing it and is determined to extend the process for as long as necessary."
"We're getting closer to a situation where, if I had to place a bet, I'd say Antonelli will join Mercedes and Verstappen will remain with his current team."
