Max Verstappen Leads Italian GP Practice as Kimi Antonelli’s Debut Ends in Dramatic Crash
Max Verstappen leads the opening practice session for the Italian Grand Prix, while Kimi Antonelli experiences a significant crash during his first F1 practice.
Max Verstappen led the way in the first practice session of the F1 Italian Grand Prix, which was overshadowed by a major accident involving Mercedes junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Antonelli's much-anticipated first practice session in F1 had barely begun when he lost control at Parabolica, leading to a significant crash while driving George Russell's Mercedes.
An 18-year-old Italian driver, anticipated to take over for Lewis Hamilton who is heading to Ferrari in 2025, emerged unscathed from an incident that caused a red flag in the first practice session, though he completed only five laps.
Charles Leclerc secured the second-best time in his improved Ferrari, trailing Verstappen by 0.228 seconds. Lando Norris, who clinched victory at the Dutch Grand Prix last weekend, finished third for McLaren, 0.241 seconds behind.
Carlos Sainz secured fourth place driving for Ferrari, while Valtteri Bottas impressed with his performance, earning fifth position for Sauber.
Oscar Piastri of McLaren finished in sixth place, followed by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, Alex Albon from Williams, Sergio Perez, and Fernando Alonso.
Numerous motorists experienced incidents like Antonelli's at the last turn, which has a new surface, but managed to prevent his type of crash from happening again.
Newcomer to F1, Franco Colapinto, who has taken over Logan Sargeant's spot at Williams, had an off-track excursion into the gravel but successfully kept his car from hitting the barriers, finishing in 17th place.
