Max Verstappen Downplays Adrian Newey’s Departure Amid Red Bull’s 2024 Struggles
Max Verstappen’s opinion: Is Adrian Newey's departure causing Red Bull's difficulties?
"Typically, no. However, since the announcement of his departure, things have become more challenging."
Max Verstappen, a three-time Formula 1 world champion, believes that Adrian Newey leaving Red Bull probably hasn’t affected the team’s performance in races during the 2024 season.
Before the Miami Grand Prix, Red Bull revealed that Newey will formally depart from the team in the initial months of 2025.
By chance, Red Bull has found themselves entangled in the development competition, jeopardizing their leading position in the constructors' championship.
McLaren trails Red Bull by 30 points with nine races remaining, but they have the advantage of momentum.
In 2024, Red Bull faced difficulties with their new upgrades and decided to switch back to an earlier version of their car's floor design during the most recent race at Zandvoort to try to resolve these issues.
While addressing the media at the Italian Grand Prix, where Crash.net is in attendance, Verstappen was questioned about whether Red Bull's recent struggles are connected to Newey's exit.
He responded, "Usually, no. However, things have become more challenging since his departure was made public. Ideally, whether someone is departing suddenly or not, it shouldn't impact performance right away."
"The car hasn't changed at all, so typically, no."
Verstappen disclosed that communication with Newey has been limited in recent weeks following the relocation of his office within the Red Bull factory.
He mentioned that the past few weeks haven’t been very active for him. He also noted that he has relocated his office within the factory.
"However, whenever I encounter him, our relationship is solid; that's never been an issue."
Verstappen acknowledged that it would be "unjust" to question him about the car considering his new role within the team before his exit next year.
"No, and I believe it would be somewhat unjust to proceed in that manner," he clarified.
Verstappen holds a 70-point lead over Lando Norris in the drivers’ standings.
Although they ended up more than 20 seconds behind the McLaren driver, Red Bull is anticipated to perform more strongly at Monza this coming weekend.
