Max Verstappen Dominates Belgian GP Opening Practice, Faces Grid Penalty Challenge
Max Verstappen dominates the first practice session at the Belgian Grand Prix, leaving Oscar Piastri and Alex Albon trailing behind.
Max Verstappen led the timing charts with ease during the first practice session of the F1 Belgian Grand Prix.
The current world champion for Red Bull ended the race 0.531 seconds ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri, who recently celebrated his first grand prix win in Hungary.
Verstappen's effort to secure his first win in four races has suffered a setback, as he will face a 10-place grid penalty in Sunday's grand prix due to the installation of a new power unit.
Alex Albon displayed impressive speed, securing third place for his Williams, trailing Verstappen by approximately 0.727 seconds.
The Williams driver outperformed the Mercedes pair, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, each of whom ended up trailing Verstappen's record by over eight-tenths.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc secured the sixth position, followed by Red Bull's Sergio Perez and McLaren's Lando Norris.
Carlos Sainz finished in the top 10 for Ferrari, while Lance Stroll secured a spot in the top 10 for Aston Martin.
Esteban Ocon managed to finish only a single lap before a possible leak forced his Alpine car back into the garage.
The only additional excitement during FP1 was caused by Daniel Ricciardo, who lost control and spun his Red Bull car while exiting La Source at the beginning of the session.
