Max Verstappen Dispels Misconceptions About Post-Silverstone Vision Issue with Hamilton
Max Verstappen explains the vision difficulty he experienced following his major collision with Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone.
Max Verstappen has explained the vision issues he experienced after his major collision with F1 championship contender Lewis Hamilton during the 2021 British Grand Prix.
The three-time world champion was inaccurately quoted during an interview on Red Bull’s website, where he shared that his vision was impacted by the 51G crash at the high-speed Copse corner during the first lap of that year’s race at Silverstone.
The initial article, now removed, contained statements implying that Verstappen continued to struggle with the health issue.
Yet, Verstappen clarified to journalists, including those from Crash.net, on Thursday before the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend.
"It happened back in 2021," Verstappen stated. "After that, it stopped. It was something that occurred during that time."
When questioned whether the problem stemmed directly from the Silverstone crash that led to Verstappen's hospitalization, he humorously responded, "It never happened before, let's put it that way!"
Verstappen commented, “I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone who is driving.”
"As race car drivers, we encounter various challenges. It's common to have minor injuries or issues from time to time. That's just part of the job."
The Dutch driver disclosed that he confided in just a few team members, as he was determined not to show any vulnerability during his intense, season-long competition with seven-time world champion Hamilton.
Although Verstappen did not provide specific details, he did state that a solution to the issue had been discovered.
“It healed, fortunately,” he remarked. “I’d prefer not to discuss it further; it’s not something anyone needs to hear about.”
In the initial interview, Verstappen explained the issue's effect on him during his close win against Hamilton at the United States Grand Prix.
"It felt like I was piloting a speedboat at 300 kilometers per hour!" Verstappen exclaimed. "I've never mentioned this before, but for a few laps, the situation was so dire that I genuinely thought about stopping the car."
"The sole strategy that proved effective was to focus on my breathing, especially with Lewis putting pressure on me. It was a crucial victory that I urgently required in the battle for the championship."
