Max Verstappen Denies Meeting with Toto Wolff Amid Mercedes F1 Speculations: A Zandvoort Exclusive
Max Verstappen claims he has no recollection of meeting Toto Wolff to discuss a potential switch to Mercedes. Connor McDonagh provides coverage from Zandvoort.
Max Verstappen declined to comment on inquiries about his supposed meeting with Toto Wolff.
While speaking to Dutch media in Zandvoort, Wolff mentioned that he had discussions with Verstappen's team about the possibility of bringing the three-time world champion on board.
The head of Mercedes has openly expressed his interest in Verstappen after Lewis Hamilton announced he would be joining Ferrari in 2025.
It now seems certain that Verstappen will remain with Red Bull, clearing the path for Andrea Kimi Antonelli to debut in Formula 1 with Mercedes.
During the post-qualifying FIA press conference at the Dutch Grand Prix, Verstappen was questioned about his discussion with Wolff.
Nonetheless, the Dutch individual denied that the meeting occurred.
When questioned by media outlets, including Crash.net, about Wolff’s remarks, he responded, “What meeting?”
He was subsequently inquired whether he or his management team participated in that meeting.
He responded, "I can't recall."
Wollff's public commendation of Verstappen has previously annoyed Red Bull's team principal, Christian Horner.
Horner claimed that Wolff was using "distraction" strategies to unsettle Red Bull: "There's been a lot of talk about him potentially moving to another team, and at times it seems like that's just a diversionary tactic to cause disruption."
However, Verstappen does not view it as an issue.
Upon being questioned about whether Wolff should cease discussing him, Verstappen responded, "No. I believe everyone has the right to express their opinions. I have a good relationship with Toto. I think he is transparent about the team's internal matters."
“I believe there are no issues with the current driver lineup. Meanwhile, I concentrate on my own responsibilities, as there's plenty to handle already. That's where our focus remains.”
Max Verstappen will begin his home Grand Prix at Zandvoort from the second spot on the starting grid, having finished 0.3 seconds slower than Lando Norris in the qualifying session.
