Single-word Ofsted evaluations for public schools are being discontinued immediately, a decision that has been celebrated as a "significant milestone for children."
Before, the academic oversight body handed out one of four possible ratings to the schools it reviewed: outstanding, good, requires improvement, or inadequate.
Starting this academic year, the Department for Education (DfE) has introduced a system where four grades will be assigned within the current sub-categories: quality of education, behavior and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management.
Starting in September 2025, schools will begin issuing report cards that offer a detailed overview of their performance, aiming to enhance the effectiveness of inspections and promote betterment, the announcement stated.
The adjustment comes after consultations with educational professionals and relatives of headteacher Ruth Perry, who committed suicide following an Ofsted evaluation that demoted her Caversham Primary School in Reading from "outstanding" to "inadequate" due to issues with safeguarding.
In the previous year, an inquiry by the coroner determined that the inspection procedures played a role in her demise.
The Department for Education stated that simplistic, single phrase ratings do not offer a just and precise evaluation of a school's overall performance. They believe that this reform will assist in removing obstacles to opportunities.

Education Secretary Raises Concerns That Parents Might Not Secure Preferred Spots for No-Cost Childcare
Schools to educate students on identifying misinformation and harmful conspiracy theories online following recent unrest.
On the subject of education, Secretary Bridget Phillipson spoke to Sky News on the "Breakfast with Kay Burley" show, stating: "Today, we are implementing changes as I think it is crucial for parents to have a deeper understanding of the activities within our schools, since the current system is failing."
"The stakes are too high, and it lacks a clear emphasis on improving our schools' quality. This is crucial because I want every child to receive an excellent education and a strong foundation for their future."
The new Labour administration has made reform a key priority, committing to enhance the quality of public education and to increase funding by imposing a tax on the fees of private schools.
In today's announcement, the government declared its commitment to focusing on enhancement strategies for schools that are underperforming, instead of opting to alter their management.
Starting in early 2025, specialized teams will be deployed to assist schools that are struggling, focusing on improving their areas of deficiency.

In situations where schools are found to be severely lacking, the government will maintain its policy of stepping in.
The Department for Education (DfE) mentioned that one possible action is to issue an academy order. This directive compels maintained schools to transition into academies, potentially resulting in a shift to new management.
Earlier, Ms. Phillipson stated, "It is absolutely evident that we must reform Ofsted to ensure consistently high and improving standards for every child in every school."

Dr. Patrick Roach, the general secretary of NASUWT, acknowledged that the new administration has made a commendable choice but suggested it could do more to debunk the myth that turning schools into academies is the sole path to enhancing our educational system.
"Although today's declarations mark a significant move forward, without comprehensive and fundamental changes to repair the base of the dysfunctional accountability system, educators and school administrators will still operate within an inherently flawed framework," he stated.
