Magnussen vs. Perez: Trust Shattered in Monaco Crash Fallout
'Regret trusting him' – Kevin Magnussen continues to dispute with Sergio Perez over collision
Kevin Magnussen remains firm on his initial perspective regarding the first-lap incident with Sergio Perez in Monaco.
Kevin Magnussen maintains that Sergio Perez could have taken additional measures to prevent their collision on the opening lap of the F1 Monaco Grand Prix.
The incident occurred when Magnussen attempted to overtake Perez’s Red Bull on the inside while climbing the hill during the first lap. Perez was consequently pushed into the barriers, subsequently crashing into Nico Hulkenberg, Magnussen’s teammate. This chain of events led to the race being halted.
Perez and Magnussen blamed each other for the incident, with Magnussen firmly believing that the Mexican driver was not entirely blameless.
"I don't consider Checo to be an unsportsmanlike driver," Magnussen commented prior to the Canadian Grand Prix. "However, I was taken aback when he didn't give me enough space."
"It's obvious he was trying to corner me to scare me into quitting. However, that's definitely not the proper way to compete."
"He can't claim he didn't notice me. He definitely saw me. There's no denying it. He did see me. So yes, I maintained my position because I believed he would give me room since he was aware of my presence."
"He had noticed me, and I was certain he had. If there's any doubt about whether he's seen you, the perceived risk feels greater."
"If I hadn't been certain he noticed me, I likely would have just pulled back. But I was absolutely clear that he had seen me. So, I assumed he would leave enough space for a car. I believed he would do that. Looking back, I realize I shouldn't have trusted him."
"However, the reality remains that he didn't provide enough space for a car. Perhaps with my experience, I should have anticipated that some drivers don't consistently leave a car's width. There's always a chance they won't."
After watching replays of the incident, Magnussen remains firm in his initial opinion.
The Dane mentioned that he had reviewed it multiple times. He noted that while events can appear one way when they occur, one's perspective often shifts upon later reflection. However, in this instance, his opinion remained largely unchanged.
