Liberty Media Faces DOJ Probe Over Rejection of Andretti F1 Entry
Liberty Media, the owners of Formula 1, are being scrutinized by the United States Department of Justice following their decision to deny Andretti's application to join F1.
Liberty Media, the proprietors of Formula 1, are being scrutinized by the U.S. Department of Justice after they turned down Andretti's application to join the team.
At the beginning of this year, Formula 1 rejected Andretti's application to become the sport's 11th team.
The team's proposal from the United States was given the green light by the FIA, the motorsport governing authority, in October 2023, but F1 ultimately did not grant final approval.
In a statement, F1 contended that although the Andretti name is somewhat known among F1 enthusiasts, their analysis suggests that F1 would enhance the Andretti brand more than Andretti would benefit F1.
Formula 1 has indicated that although Andretti's attempt to become the 11th team for the 2025 and 2026 seasons has been turned down, they could have a chance to join in 2028 if they secure a partnership with General Motors.
An inquiry has been initiated by the US Department of Justice, as confirmed by Liberty Media's Greg Maffei on Thursday.
"This morning, we disclosed during an investor call that the Department of Justice is conducting an investigation," Maffei stated, according to The Athletic.
"We plan to offer our complete cooperation with the investigation, including fulfilling any associated information requests."
"We made our decision regarding F1 while adhering to all relevant US antitrust regulations, and we have previously explained our reasoning concerning Andretti in earlier statements."
Maffei asserts that Formula 1 is still welcoming to "new participants" even though Andretti's bid was turned down.
"We definitely do not oppose the notion that not all expansions are inherently wrong," he stated.
“There is a process for expansion that needs the endorsement of both the FIA and F1.”
"We're definitely willing to consider new applicants and possibly approve them if they fulfill the necessary criteria."
