Liberal Democrats Demand Inquiry as Ministry of Defence Loses Weapons and Hundreds of Devices Amid Security Concerns
Automatic weapons, handguns, and numerous gadgets have gone missing from the Ministry of Defence
The Liberal Democrats are calling for an immediate investigation into the lost equipment and arms, citing concerns that "sensitive national security information" might "fall into the wrong hands" – even as the government maintains that it prioritizes security "very seriously".
Friday, December 27, 2024, 1:
Over the past two years, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has reported the loss or theft of several items, including pistols, a decommissioned machine gun from World War I, and a rifle.
The Liberal Democrats are calling for an immediate investigation following the discovery of the missing firearms.
Information gathered by the group indicates that over 700 electronic devices including computers, laptops, phones, and USB drives from the department were either misplaced or stolen during that time frame.
Defense spokesperson for the party, Helen Maguire, criticized the government for being clumsier than the fictional character Goldfinger in handling national security issues, demanding an investigation.
The Ministry of Defense emphasized its commitment to equipment security, stating it has stringent measures and protocols in place to avoid any losses or thefts.
All incidents of missing and stolen firearms are thoroughly examined
The information regarding the lost equipment was disclosed to the Liberal Democrats following a set of parliamentary inquiries submitted by Ms. Maguire.
In 2023, a pair of decommissioned World War II firearms went missing, and a Glock 19 handgun was taken.
An SA80 rifle, commonly employed by the British Armed Forces in numerous engagements since its debut in the early 1980s, was misplaced and later retrieved, along with a decommissioned World War I-era machine gun.
Defense Minister Luke Pollard emphasized that the Ministry of Defense (MoD) prioritizes firearm security highly, implementing strong measures to thwart and avoid any losses or thefts.
"He further emphasized that every incident of firearms and ammunition loss or theft is thoroughly and strictly examined."

In 2023, there were no reports of computers being missing, but in 2024, a total of 25 computers were either lost or stolen, with
In 2023, there were 20 incidents of USBs being either lost or stolen. This number soared by more than 500% to 125 missing USBs in 2024.
In 2023, the department reported 101 lost or stolen phones, a number which rose to 159 in 2024.
In 2024, there was a decrease in the number of laptops lost or stolen, totaling 138 compared to 176
Defence procurement minister Maria Eagle stated that personnel at the Ministry of Defence are consistently informed about their duties to protect defense assets and that appropriate security measures are implemented on their devices.

Disappearance of weapons 'ought to sound the alarm'
In a statement, Ms. Maguire expressed her concerns, stating, "It is deeply troubling to lose such essential resources, particularly during a period of increased global security tensions."
She expressed concerns that "sensitive national security information" might fall into inappropriate hands, emphasizing that the loss of the weapons should be a significant security alert.
She further stated, "The party is demanding a prompt investigation into the mismanagement of these resources and the measures being implemented to reduce losses and thefts in the upcoming year."
A spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence stated: "The protection of defence assets is a top priority for us, and we have strong measures in place to avoid any losses or thefts."
"In the event that any assets are declared lost or unaccounted for due to potential criminal actions, we initiate the appropriate measures to investigate, bring legal action, and retrieve the items."

MPs to receive pay increase exceeding inflation, approaching £94,000
An independent agency determines the salaries of MPs, which includes additional compensations for staff, office expenditures, housing, and transportation.
Political journalist @alixculbertson
Monday, February 10, 2025, 12:
Members of Parliament are set to receive a pay increase that exceeds the rate of inflation, bringing their yearly earnings to £93,904, according to the organization responsible for setting parliamentary salaries.
The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) is suggesting an increase in MPs' salaries by 2.8% starting from April of the upcoming fiscal year.
This adjustment would increase their yearly salary from £91,346 to £93,904, marking an almost £20,000 growth over the last decade.
Members of Parliament are also reimbursed for expenses related to their employees, office operations, lodging, and transportation.
Latest in politics: Suspension looms for Labour MP due to WhatsApp messages
IPSA stated that the raise aligns with the government's suggested pay guidelines for public sector employees.
The proposal is set for a period of public consultation. Since its establishment in 2011 following the 2009 parliamentary expenses scandal, all suggestions regarding MPs' salaries made by IPSA have been approved.
The increase surpasses the inflation rate of 2.5%, which exceeds the Bank of England's target of 2%.
The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) takes into account various factors when setting the salaries for Members of Parliament. These include nationwide salary data, compensation levels within the public sector, the authority's established guidelines for remuneration, and the broader economic environment.
Richard Lloyd, the chair of IPSA, stated: "We have strived to reach equitable determinations regarding salaries for both MPs and the general public."
"Our salary plan for 2025-26 takes into account the conditions of the broader public sector workforce, acknowledging the essential contributions of MPs and the prevailing economic situation."

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority is required to evaluate the salaries of Members of Parliament during the initial year of each new parliamentary session.
Nevertheless, since the election took place in July, the first anniversary falls three months into the new fiscal year. Therefore, IPSA has introduced its most recent salary proposal as a temporary solution.
A reassessment of salaries will take place in July, accompanied by a comprehensive evaluation of the method used to determine MPs' compensation, setting the stage for establishing their pay starting in 2026.
In the previous year, Members of Parliament received a salary hike of 5.5%.

MSP Denies Using AI for Trivial Queries as Scottish Parliament Faces £100K Bill

Conservative MSP refutes claims of employing AI to overload Scottish parliament with 'trivial' inquiries costing £100,000
Douglas Lumsden posed 987 questions in January to the parliament, with some concerning the total of salt and pepper packets at Holyrood and the methods used to confirm that the beeswax for Scotland's Great Seal is sourced from the parliament's own bees.
Scotland correspondent @Jenster13
Monday, February 10, 2025, 3:
A Scottish Conservative Member of the Scottish Parliament has refuted claims that he employed artificial intelligence to generate nearly 1,000 questions for parliament, amid allegations of squandering £100,000 of public funds.
Calls have been made for Douglas Lumsden to issue an apology and reimburse the expenses linked to the 987 inquiries raised in January.
The inquiries sought details regarding the quantity of sauce packets, salt and pepper sachets at Holyrood, as well as the total number of straws acquired by the Scottish government over the past decade.
The Scottish National Party reported that inquiries were made regarding the number of flags from the Scottish parliament that had disappeared in the last ten years, as well as the total count and height of flagpoles owned.
The Member of the Scottish Parliament representing North East Scotland raised questions about the typical earnings or deficits from honey jar sales at the Holyrood store. Additionally, they inquired into the methods used to confirm that the beeswax for the Great Seal of Scotland is sourced from the parliament's own bees.
Written inquiries serve as a tool to gather information for the citizenry and to oversee the activities of both the government and the legislative body.
Officials from the Scottish government have stated that the latest assessment of the cost to respond to a parliamentary question was carried out in 2008, with the expense then calculated at £98.51.
It is now expected to be significantly greater.
Mr. Lumsden refuted claims of utilizing AI technology, but expressed his openness to "evaluate any new instruments that could help in holding the government accountable."
He further stated: "Thus far, the inquiries have revealed that over the past decade, there's been no increase in surgical training positions, no forensic pathologists stationed in Aberdeen, and they've provided the incident figures for the A96."
Researchers have uncovered data on various subjects including the frequency of repairs at the Toll of Birness, the expenditure on foreign missions, the annual replacement of signs and streetlights on the A90, the amount spent on electricity by the Scottish government over a period of five years, and details regarding the size and worth of the government's vehicle fleet, including the count of Teslas in possession of the Scottish government.

The lawmaker pointed out that his Scottish Labour colleagues, Monica Lennon and Jackie Baillie, had posed more questions than he had during this session of parliament.
Mr. Lumsden stated, "I will persist in challenging this corrupt administration and refuse to be muted in defending the interests of the northeast."
Scottish Labour declined to respond to Mr. Lumsden's remarks.
In the midst of the debate, SNP MSP Kevin Stewart labeled Mr. Lumsden's inquiries as "frivolous" and proposed that he should issue an apology and reimburse the expenses associated with his questions.
Mr. Stewart noted, "While it's crucial for MSPs to scrutinize the government and parliament, the sheer number of inquiries being made shows a blatant disrespect for the expenditure of taxpayer money."
"During a financial crisis, voters are justifiably questioning his actions."

Rural Rebellion: Nigel Farage Claims 100 Labour MPs Feel the Heat as Farmers Protest New Inheritance Tax Rules
![](https://automobilnews.eu/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/farmers-protest-farage-speaks-mps-worrie-1024x1024-16099631.png)
Farage claims that 100 Labour MPs are becoming anxious and are likely to urge Downing Street to address concerns regarding demonstrations by farmers. The head of Reform UK made these remarks ahead of a significant tractor rally at the Houses of Parliament, protesting against Labour's proposal to implement a 20% inheritance tax on farms valued over £1 million.

Nigel Farage has urged agricultural workers to maintain "steadfast and nonviolent" advocacy against the latest inheritance tax regulations, suggesting that Labour representatives in countryside constituencies might start to feel "anxious."
The leader of Reform UK addressed the crowd prior to a significant tractor demonstration in front of the Houses of Parliament today.
He further stated that upcoming demonstrations would likely influence Downing Street, especially if "local communities support these affected families" facing the new changes.
Labour has affirmed its commitment to implementing a 20% tax on inheritances from farms valued over £1 million, stating there will be no reversal on this policy.
The revisions outlined in the budget, set to be implemented in April 2026, will eliminate a provision that previously allowed family farms to be transferred without incurring inheritance tax.
On Monday, a demonstration coordinated by the group Save British Farming took place, coinciding with a parliamentary discussion on an electronic petition. This petition, which has garnered over 148,000 signatures, advocates for the maintenance of existing inheritance tax breaks for operational farms.
During an address at a Farmers To Action campaign gathering in north London prior to the Westminster demonstration, Mr. Farage expressed, "I am delighted to observe that the campaign is intensifying. It is expanding nationwide."
He stated: "I believe they are paying attention to the point I’ve been making, which is that 100 Labour MPs now hold rural constituencies. If these MPs observe local communities supporting these families, it will likely alarm them, leading to increased pressure on Downing Street, especially considering they’re already facing significant challenges.
"I believe that if this campaign remains steadfast and nonviolent, change is achievable."

Mr. Farage, accompanied by professional boxer Derek Chisora at the gathering, described the demonstrators as having conducted themselves "exemplarily" and encouraged them to remain "vocal yet lawful."
Mr. Farage additionally supported the complete elimination of inheritance tax.
"He argued that the estate tax is unfair, as it imposes a second tax on money that has already been taxed, which is terrible," he said.
"Residents of semi-detached homes in London find themselves increasingly affected by inheritance tax. Naturally, there are options like planning over seven years and other strategies, but unexpected events do occur. I genuinely think that completely eliminating inheritance tax would be beneficial."

The National Farmers' Union, known for coordinating earlier demonstrations concerning this matter, expressed its backing for any members participating in Monday's event.
NFU President Tom Bradshaw commented, "There remains a very strong sentiment regarding the suggested tax on family farms."
"We back any members choosing to participate in other respectful and legal protests that align with our goal to end the family farm tax."
According to the government, the proposed tax modifications will impact just a few of the biggest agricultural properties.

Inheritance Tax vs. Environmental Commitment: How New Policies Impact UK Farmers’ Legacy and Nature Conservation Efforts
![](https://automobilnews.eu/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/uk-farmer-examines-field-tax-documents-m-1024x1024-44055551.png)
Former governmental legal expert warns inheritance tax discourages farmers from participating in environmental conservation initiatives.
The government envisions farmers as key players in environmental preservation, yet a prominent environmental attorney argues that inheritance tax jeopardizes this role.
Political journalist @alixculbertson
Monday, February 10, 2025, 5:
A legal expert involved in a major sustainable agriculture initiative has informed Sky News that farmers are confronted with a tough decision between preserving the environment and securing their family's heritage due to the implementation of inheritance tax.
Richard Broadbent, previously a legal counsel for Natural England, criticized government policies, asserting that they've instilled a "chilling effect" on environmental restoration projects. He argued that this is due to the government imposing inheritance taxes on farmers while simultaneously requiring them to allocate land for the development and enhancement of natural habitats.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves declared in the October budget that starting in April 2026, farms valued over £1 million will be subject to a 20% inheritance tax. Previously, all farms were exempt from this tax.
Proponents of the reform argue that it will drastically cut down on the exploitation of farmland for major tax evasion, align the agricultural value of land more closely with its market price, and promote wider variation in land ownership.
However, the decision has been criticized by farmers who once more drove their tractors to Whitehall to demonstrate on Monday.
The administration has expressed its dedication to supporting agriculturalists and is actively developing environmentally friendly agricultural practices that not only benefit the ecosystem but also aim to increase farmers' earnings.
Mr. Broadbent, currently serving as an environmental lawyer at Freeth's, collaborated with the legal team at Natural England on the biodiversity net gain (BNG) policy. This policy, initiated by the Conservative party, mandates that starting in February 2024, all new property developments in England are required to enhance or improve the quality of natural habitats compared to their pre-development state.

This typically includes developers compensating landowners, frequently agriculturalists, to allow their property to revert to its natural state. This may entail setting up meadows and forests or developing reserves for natural habitats.
Contracts are typically set for a minimum of 30 years, and often extend even further, since establishing schemes for ecological restoration can require decades.
The Country Land and Business Association (CLA), an organization representing 26,000 landowners and rural entrepreneurs, criticized the government for imposing taxes that jeopardize the future of agriculture, food stability, and environmental health.
For an optimal video experience, it is recommended to use the Chrome browser.
Farmers will 'reconsider'
Mr. Broadbent mentioned that a growing number of farmers are contemplating transferring portions of their property to relatives as a strategy to dodge inheritance taxes, which might negatively impact BNG.
"If you are an agriculturalist contemplating dividing your property among relatives to enhance tax benefits, or if you're concerned that upon your passing, your heirs might need to sell off parts of the farm to cover inheritance taxes, you might reconsider committing to an extended nature restoration project," he stated.
"In addition, you're securing funding from private sources, who will expect assurance that you can fulfill the terms of the agreement."
He stated that the inheritance tax and environmental incentives were "leading to a contradiction that appears quite illogical."
Discover more: The number of farms impacted by inheritance tax could be quintuple the official estimates from the Treasury. Farmers face a dilemma as participating in eco-friendly initiatives may increase their land's value.
CLA President Victoria Vyvyan expressed to Sky News, "The government is putting farmers in a difficult position where they have to decide between maintaining their land or investing for the future. Numerous farmers are hesitant to invest in environmental initiatives such as agri-environment schemes, fearing these may reduce their productivity. They feel compelled to save every possible penny for the government."
The message against expansion is straightforward: avoid spending, investing, and enhancing – simply conserve funds to maintain the farm within the family.
"The Treasury has not fully acknowledged the economic repercussions of this policy, much less the damage to the land. They are not only imposing taxes on land values but are also jeopardizing the future of agriculture, food stability, and the environmental landscape."
For an optimal video experience, it is recommended to utilize the Chrome browser.
Environmental initiatives might increase the value of land
There are worries that initiatives aimed at restoring natural habitats could raise the worth of agricultural land, potentially causing farms to exceed the limits for inheritance tax or resulting in higher tax burdens for families.
"Our goal is to maximize the natural benefits of our property through the investments we are making," Mr. Broadbent stated.
"However, as a farmer, there's concern that this could lead to a higher tax bill. Once more, this has generated a deterrent effect."
For an optimal video viewing experience, it is recommended to utilize the Chrome browser
Enhanced agricultural practices
There's concern that rather than acquiring additional land to maintain their crop and livestock levels, farmers may opt for more aggressive cultivation of their existing plots to avoid increasing their farm's market value.
Intensive agriculture is linked to contamination of rivers, substandard conditions for livestock, and risks to human health.
"Individuals are likely to adopt more intensive farming techniques to maximize earnings from each hectare, ensuring they have funds on hand when necessary," Mr. Broadbent explained.
"This is a typical reaction, yet it's these types of motivations that are being offered to individuals."
A spokesperson for the government assured Sky News of their unwavering support for farmers.
"We are collaborating intensively with various sectors to ensure the effective implementation of biodiversity net gain, aiming to rejuvenate nature and financially benefit farmers."
"Our changes to the exemptions for agricultural and commercial properties will result in estates benefiting from a lower inheritance tax rate of 20%, compared to the usual 40%. Additionally, these payments can be distributed across a decade without any interest charges.
"This method is equitable and impartial, aiming to improve the public services essential to everyone, impacting approximately 500 estates annually."

TikTok Paradox: UK Government’s New Account Amid Device Ban
![](https://automobilnews.eu/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/uk-parliament-building-smartphone-crosse-1024x1024-59042898.png)
Number 10 has confirmed that TikTok is still prohibited on government devices, regardless of the recent creation of a ukgov account. This new account has already attracted over 350 followers. Its most popular video, highlighting commitments like cutting NHS wait times and increasing housing construction, has received around 12,000 views.
Monday, February 10, 2025, 4:
Despite the launch of an official ministerial account, Downing Street has confirmed that TikTok is still prohibited on all UK government phones.
The 'ukgov' profile was launched just a week ago and has since shared multiple announcements pertaining to public services, covering subjects such as electronic driver's licenses and the Labour Party's strategy to enhance local police forces.
Downing Street has confirmed that an exception for security reasons has been granted for the account, emphasizing that the prohibition of TikTok on official government devices, initiated in 2023, is still enforced.
The prohibition was implemented following an evaluation by the administration of Rishi Sunak, due to security worries regarding TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, which is located in Beijing.
When questioned about the prime minister's new TikTok account, his chief spokesperson informed the press, "It's our ongoing policy to evaluate our communication methods with the public to ensure that we effectively disseminate information about government services and our initiatives to enhance the lives of working individuals. We consistently reassess our social media strategies."
He stated, "Following security guidelines, we have been granted permission to operate a UK government TikTok account… under certain conditions."
In response to inquiries about the ban, the spokesperson confirmed that "the security policy remains unchanged."
"He affirmed that the limitations on operating the app on the majority of governmental apparatuses are still enforced," he stated. "It has consistently been true that certain allowances exist for operating TikTok on governmental equipment when necessary for occupational reasons, and such allowances are provided by security units following individual assessments, accompanied by implemented security precautions."
"This is the situation with the UK Government's TikTok profile."

Starmer’s Swift Action: Labour Leader Aims to Quell Fallout from WhatsApp Scandal Amidst Dual MP Suspensions

Starmer is likely eager to move past the repercussions of the WhatsApp controversy following the suspension of a second MP. Sir Keir is banking on his swift action to mitigate the impact of the scandal, although it's clear that some harm has already occurred.

Sir Keir Starmer's Labour Party demonstrates a firm approach in suspending members who have damaged the party's reputation or have not adhered to party policies.
Andrew Gwynne's dismissal came swiftly, even before his shocking remarks on WhatsApp were made public. This quick action aligns with Sir Keir's commitment to eliminating antisemitism within the party, a cornerstone of his leadership.
Labour ministers who were tasked with representing the party emphasized that the Prime Minister's decisiveness showcases his commitment to maintaining the highest standards among party members.
It became clear that once Oliver Ryan was identified as another Labour MP involved in the controversial WhatsApp group, repercussions for him were inevitable.

In his remarks yesterday evening, Mr. Ryan expressed strong disapproval of the "inappropriate" remarks shared within the group. He admitted his regret for not addressing them earlier, acknowledged his mistake in remaining silent, and offered an apology for his own statements.
Mr. Gwynne's expression of regret was significantly more sincere and thorough compared to his previous apology for "any offense I've caused" and his reference to "badly misjudged comments."
The leadership of the party has made it emphatically clear that they thoroughly denounce both the inappropriate remarks made within the group and the offensive sentiments that inspired them.

There seems to be little option but to suspend Mr. Ryan. Reports indicate that the decision was made following the party's internal investigation and prior to his consultation with the Chief Whip today, during which he was briefed on the decision.
The risk for Downing Street lies in whether additional revelations might surface from the collection of messages and if significant prior warnings about the individuals concerned had been noted.
Sir Keir is likely anticipating that his swift action will alleviate some of the scandal's impact and preserve his party's image. However, it's clear that some harm has already occurred.

Thatcher’s Legacy Continues to Shape UK Politics: An In-Depth Look at the Iron Lady’s Enduring Influence

Regardless of personal feelings towards her, the influential legacy of Margaret Thatcher persistently echoes throughout British political corridors. Margaret Thatcher stands alongside figures such as Winston Churchill and Tony Blair as one of the most notable British leaders of her era.
Sky News analyst @adamboultonTABB

Margaret Thatcher passed away on April 8, 2013. Despite this, the United Kingdom's longest-serving post-war prime minister continues to have a significant influence on current politics, even over ten years after her death.
Just last week, the Prime Minister from the Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer, referenced her case to back his proposals for deregulation. "In the 1980s, the Thatcher administration loosened regulations on financial capital…," he penned in The Times, "This is our counterpart."
No female British leader apart from Queen Elizabeth I has been portrayed in as many theatrical and cinematic works, or represented by such a multitude of performers.
Numerous actresses including Meryl Streep, Gillian Anderson, Lindsay Duncan, and Andrea Riseborough have portrayed the Iron Lady.
Harriet Walter stars in Channel 4's new drama, Brian and Maggie, portraying a televised interview where the actual Margaret Thatcher admitted to reporter Brian Walden her disbelief in "equality".
A series of notable milestones
2023 marks a significant year for both supporters and critics of Thatcher.

The Policy Exchange, a think tank based in Westminster, has initiated The Thatcher Centenary Project. This initiative began with its first meeting this week, coinciding with the notable 50-year anniversary of Margaret Thatcher's election as the leader of the Conservative Party.
On February 5, 1979, Margaret Thatcher unexpectedly defeated the sitting leader Ted Heath in the initial stage of the Conservative Party leadership contest, securing the support of 130 Members of Parliament compared to Heath's 119.
Sir Hugh Fraser, Member of Parliament and spouse of the celebrated writer Lady Antonia Fraser, also participated in the race, securing 16 votes.
Heath's tenure came to an end. Having ascended to the role of prime minister in 1970 and led the UK into joining the European Community, his time in office was marred by economic difficulties stemming from clashes with trade unions. This resulted in his defeat in both general elections held in 1974.
On February 11, 1975, during the second round of voting, she secured her position as the leader of the opposition with a decisive victory, garnering 146 votes. Her closest competitor, Willie Whitelaw, received 79 votes, while Jim Prior and Geoffrey Howe each collected 19 votes, and John Peyton obtained 11 votes.
She emerged as the inaugural female head of a prominent political party in Britain.
Four years later, she defeated Labour's Jim Callaghan in the general election, becoming the first female prime minister of Britain.
She subsequently secured victory in two more elections and served as prime minister for a total of 11 years, until her own party ousted her in the fall of 1990, an event she attributed to "betrayal."
"We require significant effects"
That happened over three decades ago, yet it doesn't clarify why she remains a powerful symbol in the present, both despised and admired.
The reasons are found in the transformative impact of her policies on Britain, her political achievements, and the strength of her personality.
In a letter to her daughter Carol, she expressed: "Mere intellectual ability is insufficient. We also require charisma and influence."
I began reporting on UK politics around 1983 and frequently conducted interviews with Mrs. Thatcher.
She was a delightful conversationalist, engaging earnestly even with a novice journalist, and appeared to relish the opportunity to defend her views with passion.
During her final years at Downing Street, she became less open and less responsive to those who opposed her views.
Several months prior to her resignation, I recall Cabinet Minister Chris Patten expressing his concerns, noting, "She must leave. She no longer pays attention."
During her tenure, she oversaw a successful military operation to reclaim the Falkland Islands, maintained a notably close bond with US President Ronald Reagan, engaged in easing tensions with Mikhail Gorbachev during the collapse of the Soviet Union, and adopted a more critical stance on participation in what later evolved into the European Union.
At home, Sir Keir continues to commend her for the "significant transformation" she brought to the UK, while he and Rachel Reeves are metaphorically stepping into her shoes as they attempt to replicate her initiatives to "awaken Britain from its slumber by unleashing our inherent entrepreneurial spirit."
The prime minister is currently seeking assistance from the private sector in housing construction and infrastructure development.
The Dairy Bandit
John O'Sullivan, who once wrote speeches for Thatcher, considers her ascent to the leadership of the Conservative Party as a major triumph for revolutionary conservative ideas.
She initiated the sale of council houses to foster a "property-owning democracy" and started the privatization of several state-owned enterprises.
Britain experienced a major decline in its classic heavy industries, alongside widespread deregulation, sparking significant growth in the services and financial sectors.
She challenged the authority of trade unions and overcame the strike led by the National Union of Mineworkers.
Predictably, she was widely despised by numerous individuals within Britain’s central and left-leaning political circles.
During the 1980s and '90s, a popular chant among the students at my kids' elementary school labeled "Margaret Thatcher, the milk snatcher." This nickname stemmed from her role in ending the provision of complimentary milk to schoolchildren while serving as the Education Secretary under Heath.
In the 2005 musical "Billy Liar," there's a number titled "Merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher" which includes the lyrics "We all celebrate today/'Cause it's one day closer to your death."
When she passed away in 2013, the audience chose to retain it.
Followers of the Iron Lady
The legacy of Thatcher presents a complex challenge for Conservative leaders.
Debate persists on whether a prime-era Thatcher would have supported leaving or staying in the EU during the 2016 referendum.

She advocated for entry into the European Economic Community, relished her confrontations with Brussels during her tenure as prime minister, but turned into a harsh detractor after leaving office.
John Major, who followed her in office, continued to implement Thatcher-style policies even though he often criticized her for being overly intrusive, likening her to a "back seat driver."
Every Conservative leader since Major has professed to follow her teachings.
Temperature shift in Labour territory
Within the Labour Party, perspectives have increasingly grown more favorable over time.
Neil Kinnock, the Labour leader defeated by Thatcher in the elections of 1992 and 1997, maintains that his sole admiration for her lies in her accomplishments as a female leader. John Smith was a critic of her economic policies.
Following his triumph in the general election, Tony Blair arranged a private meeting with her at 10 Downing Street and consistently regarded her with cautious respect.
Gordon Brown took a significant step by inviting the 81-year-old to tea at Downing Street, expressing to reporters, "I admire Lady Thatcher… I am a conviction politician like her."
Upon her passing, Ed Miliband honored a woman he described as a "trailblazer."
Jeremy Corbyn, who championed left-wing politics as the Labour leader from 2015 to 2020, stood out from the norm.
He remained firm on the criticisms he directed toward Prime Minister Thatcher during his time as a Labour MP on the backbenches: "Every week, I talk to tenants facing eviction, homeless individuals fighting to get by, parents dependent on food banks, and seniors who are unable to pay for their heating. This is the consequence of Thatcher's policies. We cannot realize substantial reform until this era is completely over."

Today, Sir Keir is content to adopt Thatcher-like stances.
Interestingly, while some Conservatives are commemorating Thatcher this year, other members of the Tory party are eager to look forward.
Kwasi Kwarteng, who had a short stint as Chancellor under Liz Truss, used this milestone year to caution contemporary politicians against emulating a glorified version of Margaret Thatcher that exists only in their fantasies.
Discussion continues to be vibrant regarding Thatcher and her impact.
Her memory lives on, regardless of whether individuals personally knew her during her lifetime.

It's universally acknowledged that she relished a spirited debate, at least until her later years.
Like Churchill and Blair, she stands as one of the most unforgettable prime ministers of her era in Britain, and her highly controversial political legacy continues to resonate into the following century.

A high-ranking Labour official has informed Sky News that the party will take disciplinary action against any MP or minister involved in the controversy surrounding Andrew Gwynne's WhatsApp group.
The minister of health was dismissed following the disclosure of remarks he shared in a private messaging group.
According to the Mail on Sunday, he allegedly made antisemitic remarks and humorously wished for the death of an elderly constituent before the forthcoming election.

"I'm not aware of the comments made by others in that WhatsApp group… I want to emphasize that there is currently an investigation underway regarding the entire matter.

In response to inquiries regarding the controversy, Alex Burghart, a Conservative and shadow Cabinet Office minister, remarked to Phillips, "It truly implies that, underneath all the superficial changes that Keir Starmer has implemented, there could still be a deep-seated issue with antisemitism among high-ranking Labour officials."
"I trust that the prime minister will address this issue without delay."
He mentioned, "It was a large WhatsApp group that included many other members from Labour."
"Did any of them intervene then? Did any of them speak up against it?"
"This comment is quite grave, and should the prime minister fail to promptly address the conduct of all individuals within that faction, it would indicate a persisting issue within the Labour Party."

After Labour made its decision, Mr. Gwynne expressed deep regret for his "poorly judged remarks" and apologized for any upset they may have caused.
"Working for the Labour Party has been my life's commitment, and being named a minister by Keir Starmer was an immense privilege."
"I fully grasp the choices made by the Prime Minister and the party, and although it's deeply disappointing to be suspended, I will assist them in whatever way possible."
Surveys indicate that Labour's approval ratings have declined following their overwhelming win last year, as the party faces challenges in sustaining its support base due to unsuccessful attempts to stimulate economic expansion.
Mr. Gwynne is the most recent minister to step down, following the departure of former Treasury minister Tulip Siddiq last month and Louise Haigh, who resigned as transport minister in November.

Ex-Conservative MP Joins Ukrainian Forces Post-Political Career
After concluding his career in British politics, Jack Lopresti has enlisted with the Ukrainian military. Lopresti, who served as a reservist in Afghanistan, explained that his prior visits to the conflict area influenced his decision to engage there following his political tenure.

"Should Ukraine be defeated… we're aware of the subsequent outcomes," ex-Conservative MP Jack Lopresti conveyed to Trevor Phillips during a conversation in Kyiv.
Less than twelve months prior, he served as the member of Parliament for Filton and Bradley Stoke, close to Bristol. Today, he is collaborating with the Ukrainian armed forces.
Mr. Lopresti, who once served as a reservist, tends to minimize his experiences in Afghanistan when questioned.

Under Fire: Casual Remarks and Deep-Seated Issues Threaten Labour’s Integrity Under Starmer’s Leadership
![](https://automobilnews.eu/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/labours-leader-silhouetted-against-fiery-1024x1024-18598178.png)
The relaxed manner in which the dismissed Labour minister made shocking remarks is likely to concern Starmer, following his efforts to reform the party. Andrew Gwynne was dismissed following the revelation of his statements in a WhatsApp group by the Mail on Sunday. Another minister has hinted that further measures might be considered against additional members of the group.
Political reporter @amandaakass
Sunday, February 9, 2025, 2:
After 14 years in the opposition, the Labour Party has finally regained power. However, within a mere seven months of governing, three of their ministers have been forced to resign due to scandals.
Releasing even a single one of the controversial remarks made by Andrew Gwynne in the "Trigger Me Timbers" WhatsApp group could have sufficed to abruptly terminate his career as a minister.
The collection of communications revealed by the Mail on Sunday, which include labeling a man as "too Jewish and too militaristic", hoping a 72-year-old non-Labour supporter would pass away before the upcoming local election, and insinuating that Diane Abbott MP approached the despatch box at PMQs solely because it was Black History Month, are profoundly disturbing. It's understandable why Mr. Gwynne was dismissed immediately after Downing Street was contacted for a comment.

The larger issue facing Sir Keir Starmer is that Mr Gwynne's comments, which were not only casual but also recorded and disseminated among a broader audience, appear to reveal a culture where both voters and prominent women within the party are openly disrespected.
The prime minister, who has prioritized combating antisemitism during his tenure as party leader, will find the offhand nature of these antisemitic remarks particularly disturbing.
This morning, Alex Burghart MP, representing the Conservatives in his role as shadow chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, labeled the comments as "sinister." He argued that they imply a deep-seated issue with antisemitism among high-ranking Labour officials, despite Sir Keir Starmer's apparent efforts to address the problem.
He further criticized other group members for not confronting or reporting those remarks when they were made, and he called on the Labour Party to conduct an investigation.
Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook affirmed the situation, informing Trevor Phillips, "an investigation is currently underway regarding the entire event" and emphasized that Mr. Gwynne's choice of words was "utterly inappropriate and, in certain cases, quite troubling."

Mr. Pennycook consistently emphasized that the prime minister took "firm action" by dismissing Andrew Gwynne and barring him from the party. He stated, "It's clear that this prime minister and his administration are deeply committed to maintaining the utmost integrity in public office and to completely eradicating antisemitism from the Labour Party."
Many of these communications seem to originate from the period prior to Sir Keir assuming leadership of the party. Yet for a prime minister who pledged "a return to the politics of public service," the issues brought up by the conduct of a minister he selected for public office remain unresolved.

UK’s ‘Strictest Headteacher’ Slams Education Secretary as ‘Marxist’ Over Academy Control Changes

Katharine Birbalsingh labels Bridget Phillipson a 'Marxist' for seeking increased government oversight over academies
Headteacher Katharine Birbalsingh criticizes the education secretary for attempting to curtail freedoms currently held by academies through her new education legislation, stating that school leaders across the UK are vehemently opposed to these suggested reforms.

The headteacher, often referred to as the most stringent in Britain, has criticized the education secretary, accusing them of adopting a "Marxist" approach by seeking to increase government oversight of academies.
Katharine Birbalsingh, the head of Michaela Community School located in Wembley, North London, is widely recognized for her emphasis on strict discipline and lofty academic expectations.
Last week, following a meeting with Bridget Phillipson, she conveyed to Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips that the education secretary is aiming to consolidate authority within the government.
When questioned if it was accurate to label the Labour minister a "Marxist," she clarified her use of the term by stating it was because "she aims to centralize… I mean that she's consolidating power within the state and that those freedoms ought to remain with the academies."
Academies have the freedom to deviate from the national curriculum and can determine their own pay and conditions. However, like other state schools, they are required to adhere to the same regulations regarding admissions, special educational needs, and exclusions, and their students take the same exams, as stated on the House of Lords website.
According to the legislation proposed, every public school, academies included, must implement the fundamental national curriculum to ensure parents are confident about the essential elements of their children’s schooling, the government announced.
Academies are set to mandate that all new educators either possess or are in the process of obtaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), and they aim to standardize how they onboard new teaching personnel.

According to the site's information for the 2022/23 school year, there were 10,176 academies with 4.9 million students enrolled, representing over 41% of all educational institutions and 54% of the student body.
The headteacher expressed concerns that Ms. Phillipson's education bill introduces changes to academies that are illogical and restrict the autonomy of academy leaders, preventing them from customizing and adapting their strategies to meet the specific needs of their communities.
Ms. Birbalsingh mentioned that among the authorities being returned to the state are the capability to modify curriculums based on the specific needs of students and the flexibility to employ through various channels.
The headteacher stated that Ms. Phillipson could not provide an answer when questioned about what she would tell a parent who is eager to enroll their child in a reputable school, especially when the available spots in that school have decreased.

The proposed bill will result in "top schools having fewer spots available, leading to these schools receiving less funding and having fewer educators," she further explained.
According to her, school administrators nationwide are extremely concerned and upset about the proposed legislation.

When Trevor Phillips brought up that Ms. Phillipson had previously alleged she was interrupted in their meeting, she rejected the claim. She stated that Ms. Phillipson and her associates were "constantly glaring at us, acting unpleasantly, making sighing noises, among other behaviors, in an attempt to intimidate us. They also failed to offer us any water."
Ms. Phillipson is facing significant scrutiny regarding suggested modifications to school inspection protocols, following a quick survey by the NAHT, a union for school leaders, which revealed on Thursday that an overwhelming majority of 92% opposed the changes.
Ofsted, the organization overseeing educational standards, intends to evaluate schools using a five-tier system in a minimum of eight different categories.
The bill focusing on children's welfare and education is presently undergoing its second round of committee review, with discussions set to continue next Tuesday.
Sky News reached out to both the Labour Party and the Education Department for their remarks. The department informed the program "Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips" that it would not discuss details of a confidential meeting.
