Liam Lawson Contract Clause Sparks Speculation Over Daniel Ricciardo’s F1 Future as Red Bull Set to Debate Driver Swap
Liam Lawson's contract clause is speculated to be the reason for Daniel Ricciardo's potential dismissal.
"Numerous insiders" claim that Red Bull executives are set to convene to discuss a driver change.
According to reports, a specific clause in Liam Lawson's contract is said to be the main reason behind Daniel Ricciardo's probable drop from Formula 1.
Ricciardo is aware that this weekend's F1 Singapore Grand Prix could potentially mark the end of his extensive racing career.
There are speculations that Red Bull might substitute him with Lawson at their affiliated team for the upcoming grand prix in Austin next month.
According to F1.com, insiders reveal that Lawson's contract includes a stipulation which allows him to be released if Red Bull fails to secure him a racing position for the upcoming season, either within their own team or elsewhere, by a specific deadline, reportedly within the past five days.
Various insiders with knowledge of the matter report that there is ambiguity surrounding the future actions of Helmut Marko, Christian Horner, Laurent Mekies, and Red Bull CEO Peter Bayer, who are anticipated to deliberate on the driver lineup following the Singapore event and prior to the Austin race on October 20.
According to the report, the Red Bull team principal still supports Ricciardo, while Marko is in favor of Lawson.
"I understand the process and the mechanics of it, and I was aware that there would inevitably be certain dates and deadlines this year," Ricciardo acknowledged over the weekend.
At the start of 2024, he was aiming to get promoted to the Red Bull team, taking Sergio Perez's spot and racing alongside Max Verstappen.
It appears that his career in Formula 1 is nearing its conclusion.
Martin Brundle, a well-regarded figure in the paddock, has mentioned that he has heard rumors about Ricciardo being substituted by Lawson in Austin.
This situation will leave Ricciardo, who is 35 years old, without any options.
For the 2025 season, the only open positions are Ricciardo’s spot at Red Bull and one seat at Sauber.
Valtteri Bottas is still negotiating to keep his position with Sauber, which could mean that Daniel Ricciardo's time in Formula 1 might be coming to an end soon.
