Lewis Hamilton Tops Italian GP FP2 as Magnussen’s Crash Disrupts Action at Monza
Lewis Hamilton leads the Italian Grand Prix second practice session, while Kevin Magnussen suffers a crash. Crash.net journalist Lewis Larkam covered the event live from Monza.
Lewis Hamilton, who is set to leave Mercedes, just barely outpaced Lando Norris of McLaren to achieve the quickest lap during the second practice session at the Italian Grand Prix.
Seven-time world champion Hamilton completed a lap around the Monza track only 0.003 seconds faster than Norris, who won the Dutch Grand Prix last weekend, during the soft tire sessions in the second practice.
Carlos Sainz of Ferrari, whom Hamilton is set to succeed at the Italian team next year, posted the third-fastest time, just 0.103 seconds behind.
In a highly competitive second practice session, the gap between the top five drivers was a mere 0.154 seconds. Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc secured the fourth and fifth positions, representing McLaren and Ferrari respectively.
The second practice session was interrupted when Kevin Magnussen crashed his Haas at the second Lesmo turn, losing control and hitting the barriers, which led to the day's second red flag.
Reigning world champion Max Verstappen finished in 14th place after abandoning his fast lap on soft tires due to going off track at the last corner.
George Russell secured the sixth position after being sidelined for the initial 20 minutes of the session while Mercedes worked on fixing his car. This delay was due to extensive damage from Andrea Kimi Antonelli's major crash during his first practice session in FP1.
Nico Hulkenberg secured the seventh position for Haas, followed by Daniel Ricciardo from Red Bull. The Aston Martin drivers, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, completed the top ten.
