Lewis Hamilton Reflects on ‘Mixed Feelings’ After Belgian GP Win Inherited from Disqualified George Russell
Lewis Hamilton experiences 'conflicted emotions' after taking victory from a 'devastated' George Russell. According to Lewis Larkam's report from Spa, Hamilton acknowledges his 'mixed emotions' following the Belgian Grand Prix win.
Lewis Hamilton has confessed to having "mixed emotions" about taking the win in the F1 Belgian Grand Prix from his Mercedes teammate George Russell.
Following an investigation by race stewards, Russell was disqualified from the Sunday race. It was found that his Mercedes W15 was 1.5 kilograms below the required weight after the fuel was removed during the FIA's post-race inspection.
Following the events, Hamilton was moved up to first place, marking his second win in the last three races. The seven-time world champion had previously broken a 945-day streak without a win at the British Grand Prix earlier this month.
In a Sunday evening Instagram post, Hamilton admitted he felt sorry for Russell.
"Today's outcome brings mixed emotions," Hamilton expressed. "I'm certainly pleased to secure the victory, but I empathize with George, and it's frustrating for the team to miss out on a one-two finish."
There are many encouraging aspects to consider from today's performance. At the beginning of the weekend, we didn't anticipate being at the forefront or having the speed we demonstrated, so it's impressive to see the significant progress and that we are competitive.
"We're carrying all these advantages into the break and will return as a more robust team, prepared to maintain our progress."
Russell emerged victorious in the 44-lap race after Mercedes took a risk with a one-stop strategy, while Hamilton opted for the more traditional two-stop approach.
The British driver called his disqualification "devastating," and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff mentioned that the team would "accept the setback" and learn from their error.
Hamilton secured his 105th career victory, marking Mercedes' third triumph in the last four races. The German team appears to be experiencing a revival in performance as they approach the summer break.
