Lewis Hamilton Opens Up About Overcoming Doubts and Emotional Triumph at British Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton admits that during his period without victories, he had "doubts" that led him to reconsider his future in Formula 1.
“There were numerous moments filled with thoughts and uncertainties, to the extent that I sometimes contemplated quitting.”
Lewis Hamilton disclosed after his victory at the British Grand Prix that he experienced numerous “doubts” during his winless streak in Formula 1, causing him to reconsider his career in racing.
Hamilton finally secured a victory in Formula 1, triumphing at this weekend's 2024 British Grand Prix.
Prior to this weekend, Hamilton had not secured a win since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which took place just before the controversial Abu Dhabi race against Max Verstappen.
The seven-time world champion executed an impeccable performance under challenging circumstances to secure his 104th F1 win and his ninth victory at Silverstone.
Hamilton was visibly moved following the race, shedding tears as he communicated with his race engineer, Peter Bonnington, over the team radio.
Afterward, he was photographed hugging his father, Anthony Hamilton, in parc ferme.
Recalling a surreal afternoon at Silverstone, Hamilton shared with Sky Sports, "My heart is pounding. I've had numerous moments here before. Crossing that finish line, I felt something inside me let go, something I had been holding onto for quite a while."
"It was the most emotional conclusion to a victory that I've ever felt. I always questioned why I never shed tears. I used to watch Rubens Barrichello cry and thought, that doesn't happen to me. But this time, it struck me deeply. After such a challenging 2021, I just tried to keep pushing forward, but our team has also faced really tough times."
"I had countless thoughts and uncertainties throughout the journey, reaching moments when I felt like giving up. But to persevere, keep pushing forward, and ultimately achieve success is truly the most incredible feeling I can recall experiencing."
Hamilton expressed his gratitude to his supporters for giving him strength through challenging periods.
"I'm absolutely certain that I can continue my work thanks to the support of my fans and the interactions I have with people globally, especially those in the UK," he mentioned.
"It's still surreal to think I spent my childhood in Stevenage… I remember when my dad handed me my very first helmet around the corner. I used to think my parents would be the only ones cheering me on. The amount of support I've received is unbelievable. Seeing so many people backing you truly lifts your spirits."
"They're incredibly kind – either giving you a gift or spreading good vibes. That’s one of the things that motivates me. I just try to concentrate on my inner calm each day."
