Lewis Hamilton has advised Mercedes to support Kimi Antonelli as his successor.
Mercedes has yet to announce who will replace Hamilton, who is set to join Ferrari in 2025.
Young sensation Antonelli is expected to be given the go-ahead and will participate in the first practice session on Friday for Mercedes at the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Hamilton mentioned to the media, including Crash.net at Monza, that he had previously stated his belief that the team should select him for the future.
“He’s among the exceptionally skilled youngsters making their mark. Though he’s now a young adult, he’s still just 18 years old.”
“It’s important for people to keep in mind that he’s only 18 years old. However, he has a promising future, and I’m eagerly looking forward to observing his development.”
"I came across an old photo of us from what I believe was 2018. Back then, he was one of the grid kids, and now it's surprising to realize he's about to become a racer on the grid."
"Experiences like this clearly make you aware of your age, but I'm definitely excited to watch him compete in Formula 1."
Hamilton supports the emerging talent
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has been praising Antonelli's exceptional abilities throughout the year.
“We’ve monitored his progress across various racing categories,” Hamilton remarked.
"Of course, he drives for Mercedes. We're noticing an influx of young drivers entering the scene. It seems to be the current trend."
"There are just 20 seats available, yet this moment marks the beginning of a new wave emerging."
"When deciding between hiring a seasoned driver and giving a chance to a young talent, the latter was chosen for me, and it turned out to be a successful decision."
"I believe it's a chance for development. He will have the opportunity to collaborate with top professionals, gain insights from both my colleagues and some new experts. It's an excellent setting for his growth."
This year, Wolff quickly promoted Antonelli to a Formula 2 position. Up to now, he has secured victories in both a sprint race and a feature race.
On Friday, he will drive a Formula 1 car in an official session for the first time ever in his home nation.
His young and innovative viewpoint might benefit Mercedes' growth.
Hamilton expressed that having additional input is certainly beneficial.
"Tomorrow, for Kimi, the goal is simply to have a good time and enjoy the experience. It will be something memorable for him."
"He has been conducting tests, but tomorrow marks his initial experience with this vehicle, which is significantly improved compared to the 2022 model."
“He’ll definitely be in a great mood tomorrow. The change is quite significant. The more details and feedback we receive, the better it will be.”
