Leclerc Cautions Ferrari’s Latest Upgrades Won’t Secure Season-Long Wins Despite Monza Triumph
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's latest improvements are ‘insufficient’ to ‘secure race victories for the remainder of the season’
"Is it adequate for us to clinch wins for the rest of the season? I don't believe so yet, though we have made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, allowing him to outperform McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren possessed the fastest vehicle at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During a press conference held by the FIA after the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to exercise caution," he remarked. "After Monaco, I believe we experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco was uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Similarly, Monza is a unique and distinctive circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few corners on this track. Our rear wing, specifically designed for this circuit, was a key factor in our victory today. Additionally, we introduced another upgrade that seems to have narrowed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I doubt this will make our car the dominant one for the remainder of the season on other tracks."
"We've got plenty of tasks ahead, but I'm thrilled to have achieved this in Italy."
Even though Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
Likewise, in the constructors' standings, Ferrari is trailing Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the hype, pointing out that there was similar speculation about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but the conditions in Baku will likely be quite distinct, and Singapore will pose yet another unique challenge. It's essential for us to recalibrate our approach. We successfully adjusted from Monaco to Montreal, but the transition between these two events demonstrated just how significant the differences can be from one race weekend to the next."
"We experienced some of the toughest races of the season, as we were trying to figure out our car's issues. Hopefully, we won't face such challenging races again, and I believe we won't."
"However, it's crucial to remember that both the team and external expectations should remain grounded and not skyrocket from just one race to the next, as that's not realistic."
"Did we make progress? Absolutely. Is it sufficient to secure victories for the remainder of the season? Not quite, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
