Leclerc Cautions Ferrari: Upgrades Not Enough to Sustain Race Wins for 2024 Season
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's latest improvements are ‘insufficient’ to ‘secure victories for the remainder of the season.’
"Are these enhancements adequate to clinch race wins for the rest of the season? Not quite, but we've made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance in order to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy to triumph over McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren had the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to exercise "caution".
He emphasized the need for caution, stating, "Following Monaco, we've encountered what I believe has been the four toughest races of the season. This is largely because Monaco's track was uniquely suited to our car at that time. Similarly, Monza is another track with very distinct characteristics."
“There were many straight sections and few turns. We equipped a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we had another upgrade that I believe brought us closer to McLaren's performance, although it might not be sufficient to make us the leading car for the remainder of the season on different tracks.”
"We still have plenty of work ahead of us, but I'm thrilled to have one here in Italy."
Though Leclerc has faced challenges since the race in Monaco, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the hype, pointing to comparable discussions about a title bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but conditions in Baku might be quite different, and Singapore will present its own unique challenges. Therefore, we need to recalibrate our approach. We successfully made adjustments from Monaco to Montreal, and as evidenced by the significant shift between those two races, each weekend can bring substantial changes."
The team experienced three or four extremely challenging races as we attempted to diagnose issues with our car. Moving forward, I am optimistic that we won't face another series of tough races, and I believe that won't happen.
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't escalate unrealistically from one race to the next."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to secure victories for the remainder of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
