Leclerc Cautions Ferrari: Monza Upgrade ‘Not Enough’ to Secure Wins for Rest of 2024 F1 Season
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are ‘insufficient’ to ‘secure victories for the remainder of the season’. He remarked, "Is it sufficient to clinch race wins until the season concludes? I don't believe so at this point, but we have made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Charles Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, which allowed him to outperform McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, demonstrating that McLaren possessed the fastest vehicle at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to be careful," he mentioned. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races this season, as Monaco's conditions were uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Similarly, Monza is a unique and distinctive circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few turns on the track. We had a rear wing specifically designed for this course, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer in performance to McLaren. However, I don't think it's sufficient to make us the dominant car for the remaining races of the season on different tracks."
"We still have plenty of work ahead of us, but I'm very pleased to have achieved this in Italy."
Even after a challenging period following the Monaco race, Leclerc is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the Constructors' Championship, Ferrari is trailing Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the high hopes, pointing out that there was similar speculation about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different challenge, and the same goes for Singapore. Therefore, we need to readjust our approach. We already did a reset between Monaco and Montreal, and as evidenced by the significant shift from one weekend to the next, it's crucial to adapt continuously."
"We endured three or four of the toughest races of the season as we tried to figure out what was happening with our car. Hopefully, we won't face another string of challenging races, and I don't believe that will happen."
"However, it's crucial to remember that not only the team but also external expectations shouldn't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Absolutely. Is it sufficient to start winning races consistently for the remainder of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
