Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Upgrades Not Enough to Secure Season-Long Wins
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvement may fall short of securing victories for the remainder of the season. "I don't believe it's sufficient to win races from now until the season's end, but we've made significant progress in the right direction," he remarked.
Charles Leclerc has issued a caution, indicating that Ferrari must enhance their performance to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by leveraging a one-stop strategy to surpass McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren had the fastest vehicle at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major improvement package for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc has advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following the Monaco race, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, considering Monaco was uniquely suited to our car then. Similarly, Monza is a very unique and distinct circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few curves. We also had a rear wing designed specifically for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren's performance. However, I don't think this will make us the leading car for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
"We still have much to accomplish, but I'm thrilled to have achieved this in Italy."
Leclerc, having faced several challenges since the Monaco race, is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
Likewise in the constructors' championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, referring to similar discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but the conditions in Baku could vary greatly, and Singapore will likely present another unique challenge. Therefore, we need to adjust our approach. We managed to make adjustments going from Monaco to Montreal, but as demonstrated, the shift between those two weekends was quite significant."
"We had a series of three or four extremely challenging races as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't encounter another string of tough races moving forward, and I believe that won't happen."
“However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as this wouldn't be realistic.
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to secure victories for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
