Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Upgrades Not Enough to Secure Dominance for Remainder of 2024 F1 Season
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are ‘insufficient’ for ‘winning races for the remainder of the season.’
"Is it sufficient to secure victories for the rest of the season? Not quite, but we've made significant progress in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance to be able to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, outpacing McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's dominance with the fastest vehicle at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update package for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "remain careful".
“We need to be careful,” he commented. “Following Monaco, I believe we've encountered the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's track was uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Monza, too, is a unique and distinctive circuit.”
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We equipped a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we had another enhancement that I believe narrowed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I don't think this will make our car the dominant one for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
"I believe there's still plenty to be done, but I'm quite pleased to have secured one here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the hype, referencing past discussions about a championship contention after his victory in Monaco.
"This weekend has been great for us, but Baku might be a whole different scenario, and Singapore will likely be different too. We need to start fresh each time. We managed to reset from Monaco to Montreal, and as evidenced by the significant difference between those weekends, every event can vary greatly."
"We then experienced three or four of the most challenging races of the season as we worked to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face another stretch of tough races moving forward, and I don't believe that will happen."
"However, it's crucial to ensure that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Absolutely. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
