Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Upgrades Not Enough to Secure 2024 F1 Season Wins
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are ‘insufficient’ for ‘winning races consistently for the rest of the season’
"Do I believe it's enough for us to secure victories for the remainder of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance to regularly compete with McLaren for the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, outpacing McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren possessed the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, focused on addressing their issues with car bouncing.
In the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced our four toughest races of the season, as Monaco was particularly unique for our car's setup at that moment. Similarly, Monza is a very distinctive and specialized circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We equipped a rear wing specifically for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we had another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren's performance. However, I don't think this will make us the leading car for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
"We still have plenty to accomplish, but I'm quite pleased to have won one here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, referencing similar discussions about a championship run after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different challenge, and Singapore will be different yet again. Therefore, we need to start fresh. We managed to reset between Monaco and Montreal, but as observed, the transition from Monaco to Montreal involved significant changes from one weekend to the next."
"We then experienced some of the most challenging races of the season as we worked to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face such tough races again in the future, and I believe that won't happen."
"However, it's crucial to ensure that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't become excessively high after just one race, as this would be unrealistic."
"Did we make progress? Yes, we did. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? I don't believe so just yet, but we have definitely moved in the right direction."
