Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Upgrades Not Enough to Secure 2024 F1 Season Wins
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's latest improvements are ‘insufficient’ to ‘secure victories for the remainder of the season’
"Will it be enough to clinch race wins for the rest of the season? I don't believe so at this point, but we've certainly made positive progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance to consistently compete with McLaren for the rest of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Charles Leclerc secured his second win of the season by effectively using a one-stop strategy to outperform McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Before Piastri took his second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren had the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major enhancement package for the Italian Grand Prix, focusing on resolving their bouncing issues.
During the FIA press conference held after the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following the Monaco race, we've experienced four of the toughest races this season, as Monaco's conditions were uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Similarly, Monza is another track with very distinctive characteristics."
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We also had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we introduced another upgrade that I believe has helped us close the gap with McLaren. However, I doubt this will make our car the dominant one for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
"We still have plenty of work ahead of us, but I'm thrilled to have achieved this in Italy."
Even after facing challenges since Monaco, Leclerc is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari is trailing Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, pointing to previous championship speculation after his victory in Monaco.
"This weekend, we showed great strength, but Baku might be a completely different scenario, and the same goes for Singapore. We need to adjust our approach accordingly. We made such an adjustment moving from Monaco to Montreal, and it was evident that there was a significant difference between the two weekends."
“We faced three or four of the toughest races of the season while trying to figure out what was happening with our car. Hopefully, we won't have to endure another challenging set of races in the future, and I believe that we won't.”
"However, it's crucial to remember that both the team and the public should keep their expectations in check from one race to the next, as sudden, unrealistic expectations are not practical."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to win races for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
