Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Upgrades Not Enough to Dominate 2024 F1 Season Despite Monza Triumph
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's latest improvement won't be sufficient to secure victories for the remainder of the season. "Will it be enough to win races from now until the season concludes? Not quite yet, but we've certainly made significant progress," he stated.
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance to consistently compete with McLaren for the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by executing a one-stop strategy, allowing him to surpass McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, which underscored that McLaren had the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, focusing on resolving their issues with bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following the Monaco race, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's conditions were uniquely suited to our car at that point. Similarly, Monza is a track with its own distinct characteristics."
"There were many straight sections and few turns on this track. We used a rear wing specifically designed for this course, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we had another upgrade that I believe brought us closer to McLaren's performance, though I don't think it will make our car the dominant one on other tracks for the remainder of the season."
"We still have plenty of tasks ahead, but I'm thrilled to have achieved this in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari is trailing Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized expectations, referencing similar discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"This weekend we performed exceptionally well, but Baku could present a completely different challenge, and Singapore might be different yet again. It's essential to recalibrate our approach. We managed to adjust from Monaco to Montreal, but as demonstrated, the transition from one weekend to the next can be quite significant."
"We then experienced three or four of the most challenging races of the season as we tried to figure out what was happening with our car. Hopefully, we won't face a similar series of tough races moving forward, and I don't believe that will happen."
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that's not a realistic approach."
"Have we made progress? Absolutely. Is it sufficient to secure victories for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
