Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Upgrades Not Enough for Full-Season Domination
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements might fall short of securing victories for the remainder of the season. "While it's a positive move forward, I don't believe it's sufficient to consistently win races from now until the end."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari needs to enhance their performance further if they aim to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by using a single pit stop strategy to outperform McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's superior speed at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major enhancement package for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's conditions were exceptionally suited to our car at that moment. Similarly, Monza is a unique and distinctive circuit."
"A track with many straight sections and few curves. We equipped a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we introduced another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren, although it may not be sufficient to make our car the leading contender for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
"We still have much to accomplish, but I'm very pleased to have one here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered the high hopes, referring to the similar buzz about a title bid after his victory in Monaco.
"This weekend, we performed exceptionally well, but the situation in Baku might be entirely different, and Singapore will likely present another set of challenges. Therefore, it's crucial for us to recalibrate. We successfully adjusted from Monaco to Montreal, but as evident, the transition between those two weekends involved significant changes."
The team endured some of the toughest races of the season while attempting to figure out the issues with their car. Looking ahead, we hope to avoid such challenging races, and I believe that we won't face similar difficulties.
"However, it's crucial that both the team and the external expectations remain grounded and don't escalate unrealistically from one race to the next."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to win races for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've certainly moved in the right direction."
