Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Upgrades Not Enough for Consistent Wins in 2024 F1 Season
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements aren't sufficient to secure victories for the remainder of the season. "Is it enough to win races from now until the end of the season? I don't believe so yet, but we've made significant progress in the right direction," he stated.
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance to consistently compete with McLaren for the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Charles Leclerc secured his second win this season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, which allowed him to outperform McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Leclerc was trailing by five seconds before Piastri's second pit stop, underscoring McLaren's dominance with the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, focusing on addressing their issues with car bouncing.
In the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc has advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
“We need to proceed with caution,” he mentioned. “Post-Monaco, we've encountered our four most challenging races this season, largely because the characteristics of Monaco suited our car at that time. Similarly, Monza is a unique and distinctive circuit.”
"There were many straight sections and few curves. We also had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren's performance, although I don't think it's sufficient to make us the leading car for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
"We still have much to accomplish, but I'm nonetheless very pleased to have achieved one here in Italy."
Even though Leclerc has faced difficulties since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, referencing similar discussions of a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different challenge, and Singapore will likely be distinct as well. Therefore, we need to start fresh. We managed to reset between Monaco and Montreal, but there was a significant shift from one weekend to the next, as evidenced by the difference between Monaco and Montreal."
"We experienced three or four of the toughest races this season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Moving forward, I hope we don't face another stretch of challenging races, and I believe that won't happen."
"However, it's crucial to ensure that both the team and the outside expectations don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to secure race wins for the remainder of the season? Not quite yet, but we are moving in the right direction."
