Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Recent Upgrades Not Enough to Sustain Winning Streak Through 2024 Season
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvement is ‘insufficient’ to secure ‘victories for the remainder of the season.’
"Is this improvement enough to consistently win races for the rest of the season? I don't believe so at this point, but we have made significant progress in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has emphasized that Ferrari must enhance their performance to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, allowing him to outperform McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's dominance with the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Since Monaco, we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's track suited our car's capabilities at that moment. Similarly, Monza is a unique and specialized circuit."
“A track with many straight sections and few corners. We had a rear wing designed specifically for this track, which contributed to our victory today. We also introduced another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren's performance, but I don't think it's sufficient to make us the leading car for the rest of the season at other tracks.”
"We still have plenty to accomplish, but I'm thrilled to have one here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers’ standings.
Likewise, in the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the high hopes, referencing the comparable discussions about a title bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different scenario, and Singapore will likely be distinct as well. Therefore, we need to recalibrate our approach. We successfully adjusted our strategy from Monaco to Montreal, but as demonstrated, the transition between these two races involved significant changes from one weekend to the next."
"We experienced some of the toughest races of the season, simply because we were trying to figure out the issues with our car. I'm optimistic that we won't face another string of three or four challenging races moving forward, and I don't believe that will happen."
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't become overly ambitious from one race to the next, as that wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to win races for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
