Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Recent Upgrades Not Enough to Secure Season-Long Victory
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are insufficient for securing victories for the remainder of the season. "Is it enough to consistently win races from now to the end of the season? I don't believe so yet, but we've definitely made significant progress," he stated.
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance if they aim to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, allowing him to surpass McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Leclerc was trailing by five seconds before Piastri's second pit stop, underscoring McLaren's dominance at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major improvement package at the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to exercise caution.
"We need to be careful," he commented. "Since Monaco, I believe we've experienced our four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's track was uniquely suited to our car's capabilities at that moment. Monza is another track with its own unique characteristics."
"There were many straight sections and few turns on the track. We had a rear wing designed specifically for this circuit, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has narrowed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I don't think it's sufficient to make our car the dominant one for the remaining races of the season on different tracks."
"We still have plenty of tasks ahead of us, but I'm thrilled to have achieved one here in Italy."
Even though he's had a challenging time since the Monaco race, Leclerc is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' championship, Ferrari is trailing Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, referencing similar discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"This weekend has been quite successful for us, but Baku could present a completely different challenge, and the same goes for Singapore. It’s crucial for us to approach each race with a fresh perspective. We adjusted our strategy from Monaco to Montreal, and it was clear that there was a significant shift in conditions and performance from one weekend to the next."
The team experienced three or four of their most challenging races this season as they worked to figure out issues with their car. Looking ahead, they hope to avoid repeating such tough races and remain optimistic that it won't happen again.
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that's not a realistic outlook."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the remainder of the season? Not quite yet, but we've certainly moved in the right direction."
