Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Recent Upgrades Not Enough to Clinch 2024 F1 Season
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are ‘insufficient’ to ‘secure victories for the remainder of the season’. He stated, "Is it adequate to triumph in races through the end of the season? I doubt it, but we've made significant progress in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, outperforming McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's superior speed at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at solving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc has advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following the Monaco race, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's track suited our car's characteristics at that moment. Similarly, Monza is a unique and distinct track."
"There's a lot of straight sections and not many turns on this track. We had a rear wing specifically designed for it, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we introduced another upgrade that I believe has narrowed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I don't think it's enough for us to dominate on different tracks for the remainder of the season."
"We still have much to accomplish, but I'm thrilled to have secured one here in Italy nonetheless."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the hype, referring to comparable discussions about a championship run after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but conditions in Baku and Singapore could be quite distinct. Therefore, we need to adjust our approach. We successfully adapted from Monaco to Montreal, but as observed, there was a significant shift between those two weekends."
"We then endured some of the toughest races of the season, simply because we were trying to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face several more challenging races moving forward, and I don't believe that will happen."
"However, it's crucial to ensure that both the team and external expectations don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as this wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've moved in the right direction."
