Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Monza Win Not Enough to Secure Season-Long Dominance
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are insufficient for securing victories for the remainder of the season. He acknowledges progress but doubts it will be enough to consistently win races.
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance to continually compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by taking advantage of a one-stop strategy, outpacing McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second visit to the pits, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren possessed the fastest vehicle at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major enhancement package for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's conditions were uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Monza, too, is a very unique and distinct circuit."
"There were many straight sections and only a few turns. We installed a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we had another upgrade that I believe has narrowed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I don't think this will make our car the dominant one for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
“We have a considerable amount of work remaining, but I'm still very pleased to have achieved this in Italy.”
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since Monaco, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized expectations, pointing to similar discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"This weekend, our performance was solid, but the conditions in Baku and Singapore will likely present new challenges. We'll need to adjust our approach accordingly. We successfully adapted from Monaco to Montreal, but it was evident that the differences between those weekends were significant."
"After that, we endured three or four of the toughest races of the season while we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won’t face another stretch of challenging races moving forward, and I believe that’s unlikely to happen."
"However, it’s crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don’t skyrocket from one race to the next, as that wouldn’t be realistic."
"Did we make progress? Absolutely. Is it sufficient to secure victories for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we're definitely moving in the right direction."
