Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Monza Win Not a Sign of Season-Long Dominance
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are "insufficient" for "securing victories for the remainder of the season." He stated, "Is it sufficient to clinch wins for the rest of the season? I doubt it, but we've made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance if they want to regularly compete with McLaren for the rest of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by taking advantage of a one-stop strategy, allowing him to outperform the McLaren pair, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's superior speed at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to exercise caution," he stated. "Following the Monaco race, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, largely because the Monaco circuit was uniquely suited to our car at that point. Similarly, Monza is a unique and distinctive track."
"There were many straight sections and only a few corners. We used a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we had another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren's performance. However, I don't think this will make us the dominant car for the remaining races on different tracks."
"We still have much work ahead, but I'm very pleased to have won one here in Italy."
Despite facing challenges since the Monaco race, Leclerc is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered the high hopes, referencing the similar buzz about contending for the championship after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different challenge, and Singapore will likely be distinct as well. Therefore, we need to approach each event with a fresh mindset. We successfully adjusted our strategy from Monaco to Montreal, but the drastic shift between these two weekends was evident."
"We then experienced three or four of the most challenging races of the season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. I hope we won't face another set of tough races moving forward, and I don't believe that will happen."
"However, it’s crucial to ensure that both the team and external expectations don’t skyrocket from one race to the next, as that wouldn’t be realistic."
"We've made progress, but it’s not sufficient to secure victories for the rest of the season. However, we are heading in the right direction."
