Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Monza Win Not a Guarantee for Rest of F1 Season
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's update is 'insufficient' to 'secure victories for the remainder of the season.' He stated, "Is it sufficient to start winning races from now until the season's conclusion? I believe not yet, but we have made significant progress in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy to surpass McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second visit to the pits, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's superior speed at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the post-race FIA press conference at Monza, Leclerc advised Ferrari to exercise caution.
“We need to be careful,” he remarked. “Following Monaco, I believe we experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco suited our car's setup at that moment. Similarly, Monza is a unique and distinctive circuit.”
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We used a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren's performance. However, I don't think this will make us the dominant car for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
"We still have much to accomplish, but I'm thrilled to have secured one in Italy."
Even though Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari is trailing Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the high hopes, referencing past discussions of a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different challenge and Singapore will also be unique. Therefore, we need to adjust our approach. We successfully made adjustments from Monaco to Montreal, but as demonstrated, the transition from one weekend to the next was quite significant."
"We experienced three or four of the toughest races this season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face several more challenging races moving forward, and I don't believe that will happen."
“However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as such expectations are unrealistic.”
“Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we have made a positive move forward.”
