Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Monza Win a Step Forward, But More Work Needed to Challenge McLaren in 2024 F1 Season
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are insufficient to secure victories for the remainder of the season. He acknowledges the progress made but believes it is not yet adequate for winning races consistently.
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by effectively using a one-stop strategy to outpace McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's superior speed at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
"We need to be careful," he mentioned. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco suited our car uniquely at that moment. Monza, too, is a unique and distinctive circuit."
“There were many straight sections and few turns. We had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has narrowed the gap between us and McLaren. However, I don't think this will make us the dominant car for the remainder of the season on different tracks.”
"We still have plenty of work ahead of us, but I'm very pleased to have achieved a victory here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since Monaco, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by just 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the hype, referring to previous discussions of a title bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different challenge, and Singapore will also be unique. Therefore, we need to recalibrate. We managed to adjust from Monaco to Montreal, but as demonstrated, the transition between these two events was significantly drastic."
"We had a stretch of three or four terrible races as we worked to figure out our car's issues. I hope we don't face another series of challenging races, and I believe we won't."
"However, it’s crucial that not just the team, but also the external expectations don’t skyrocket from one race to the next, as this wouldn’t be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? Not yet, but we have definitely moved in the right direction."
