Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Italian GP Upgrade Not Enough for Consistent Wins
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's latest upgrade is insufficient for securing victories for the remainder of the season, stating, "Is it sufficient for us to win races until the season concludes? I don't believe so at this point, though we've made a notable improvement in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has issued a caution, stating that Ferrari must enhance their performance in order to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, managing to outperform McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's dominant speed at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major upgrade package for the Italian Grand Prix, focusing on resolving their issues with bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the race at Monza, Leclerc advised Ferrari to exercise caution.
"We need to be careful," he remarked. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the most challenging four races of the season, as Monaco's track was particularly suited to our car at that moment. Monza, too, is a unique and distinctive circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few turns on this track. We also used a rear wing specifically designed for this circuit, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we introduced another upgrade that I believe has narrowed the gap to McLaren. However, I don't think this will make us the leading car for the remainder of the season on different tracks."
"We've got plenty of tasks ahead, but I'm still thrilled to have achieved one here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers’ standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the hype, referencing previous discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"Our performance this weekend has been impressive, but Baku could present a completely different challenge, and Singapore will likely be different as well. We need to adjust our approach. We successfully made adjustments between Monaco and Montreal, but the difference from one weekend to the next was significant."
"After that, we experienced several of our most challenging races of the season, as we were attempting to figure out the issues with our car. I'm hopeful that we won't face such tough races in the near future, and I believe that we won't."
"However, it is crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and do not escalate unrealistically from one race to the next."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to win races for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've certainly moved in the right direction."
