Lando Norris Tops Timesheets but Struggles with Comfort in McLaren F1 Car Ahead of Belgian GP
Lando Norris expressed discomfort with his McLaren F1 car even though he recorded the fastest time in FP2 at Spa-Francorchamps.
Lando Norris has expressed that he "hasn't felt at ease" with his McLaren F1 vehicle, even though he finished Friday's practice session at the Belgian Grand Prix with the quickest lap time.
Norris demonstrated impressive speed to lead a McLaren 1-2 finish, outpacing his teammate and Hungarian Grand Prix victor, Oscar Piastri, by two-tenths of a second during the second practice session at Spa-Francorchamps on Friday.
Even though he led the race, Norris confessed that he doesn't feel completely at ease driving his McLaren.
“It’s good, but still challenging and competitive. Red Bull is fast right now. It’s tough,” Norris commented.
"I haven't been at ease with the car today. I hope that changes tomorrow and I feel better. We'll work on making some adjustments."
"I understand that the results appear favorable on paper, but I didn't feel very confident while performing. I hope to find a better groove moving forward."
"I don't believe it's too much. Whenever we arrive at a track these days, we immediately get extremely close to the limit."
"You don't typically overhaul the entire car in one night these days. If you find yourself doing that, it means you weren't adequately prepared beforehand."
"We've done thorough preparations and have everything properly arranged. It's functioning as expected. However, on a personal level, I'm not entirely confident that I can execute flawlessly just yet."
Norris finished with a time that was 0.217 seconds quicker than Max Verstappen from Red Bull. Verstappen will face a 10-place grid penalty for Sunday's race due to surpassing the allowed number of power units for the season.
Sky F1 analyst Naomi Schiff mentioned that Verstappen's penalty provides McLaren with a significant chance to secure consecutive victories.
"Max appeared extremely fast during the first practice session, particularly in the second sector, even though that's not the best spot for overtaking. However, following this session, McLaren might feel a bit more confident that Max's speed can be managed," she commented.
"They need to make the most of the initial phase of the race. If the drivers collaborate and avoid hindering each other, they can create a significant lead, making it difficult for Max to catch up to them."
"They have a significant chance ahead of them, and it’s crucial they make the most of it."
