Lando Norris Secures Consecutive Poles in Thrilling Italian GP Qualifying; Max Verstappen Falters to Seventh
Lando Norris secures consecutive pole positions at the Italian Grand Prix, while Max Verstappen finishes in seventh place.
Lando Norris secured his second consecutive pole position in Formula 1 after a highly competitive qualifying session at the Italian Grand Prix.
The McLaren driver completed a lap 0.109 seconds quicker than his teammate Oscar Piastri, as George Russell managed to get his Mercedes ahead of both Ferrari cars to secure third place.
Max Verstappen, who is competing with Norris for the championship, had a disappointing qualifying session, finishing in seventh place and nearly seven-tenths of a second behind the pole position.
Local heroes Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will start from fourth and fifth positions respectively, while Lewis Hamilton will begin just behind them in sixth place.
The qualifying session at Monza was incredibly exciting, with the fastest six drivers separated by only 0.186 seconds.
"Securing another pole position is incredible. It's astonishing to achieve first and second place given how competitive the field has been," Norris remarked.
"It pains me to admit it, but my performance was not up to par. Nevertheless, I am extremely pleased."
"I don't anticipate a straightforward race due to some uncertainties with the tires and their wear, but I am eager for the challenge."
Max Verstappen narrowly beat his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez, who finished in eighth place, just ahead of Alex Albon driving for Williams and Nico Hulkenberg in his Haas car.
Fernando Alonso narrowly missed advancing to Q3, falling short by only 0.010 seconds, and ended up in 11th place. He finished ahead of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo.
Kevin Magnussen secured the 13th position, while the Alpine teammates Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon followed closely in 14th and 15th place respectively.
Yuki Tsunoda was unable to make it to Q2 alongside his Red Bull teammate, expressing disappointment at securing only 16th place. He finished ahead of Aston Martin's Lance Stroll, with Franco Colapinto, in his first F1 qualifying session for Williams, taking the 18th spot.
Sauber drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu are set to begin Sunday's grand prix from the last two positions on the grid, having finished in 19th and 20th place, respectively.
