Lando Norris Eyes Canadian GP Glory: McLaren Star Confident Amidst Tight F1 Battle
"We're competing" – Lando Norris remains hopeful for a victory at the Canadian GP in F1
Lando Norris is determined to secure his second F1 win of the season.
Lando Norris believes that McLaren has the potential to compete with Mercedes and Red Bull for a victory in the Formula 1 race at the Canadian Grand Prix.
On Saturday in Montreal, Norris secured the third position in qualifying, just a tenth of a second behind George Russell, who claimed pole position.
The British driver’s achievement extended McLaren’s streak of strong performances, maintaining their status as a leading F1 team a year after they were struggling at the bottom of the standings.
Norris secured his first-ever win in Formula 1 at the Miami Grand Prix last month, outperforming Max Verstappen after a well-timed Safety Car intervention.
Considering McLaren's impressive performance, Norris believes there's no reason he can't secure another win.
"We've shown impressive race speed in the past few races," he stated. "So I believe we are contenders. The competition is incredibly tight. However, George has been the one to beat throughout the weekend."
"They've shown impressive speed. Mercedes has demonstrated significant quickness, and George has performed excellently in the qualifying rounds. Thus, it appears that, theoretically, they have…"
"They seem more at ease with their position; from the beginning, they've consistently been at the top of the timing charts, whereas we haven't. We've gradually improved over the course of the weekend."
"Sunday has consistently been a strong performance day for us in recent months. If we can replicate that tomorrow, I'm eager to see what kind of race we can deliver."
Sunday’s race might become disorderly because there is a strong likelihood of rain.
Moreover, the competition has been extremely tight, with only slightly more than two-tenths of a second dividing the first seven positions.
Lando Norris expressed his thoughts by stating, "I could have been in the same situation as Max, not securing the pole position but still achieving a fast lap time. I'm genuinely pleased with third place. The competition is really tight. To be this close with a lap that I felt was good, but not exceptional, makes me happy. I also understand that George mentioned he didn't fully capitalize on his performance, which is a similar sentiment."
"The challenging conditions, tricky track layout, and overall difficulty are what define Montreal. This year, it was probably tougher than in previous years. Despite this, securing a P3 finish was still satisfying, even though we were just two hundredths of a second away from pole position."
