Lando Norris comments on McLaren's team orders in F1: "My goal is to compete"
"My main objective is to compete. That's the reason I'm here. We've discussed all aspects and are ready for any situation."
Lando Norris has made it clear that he is eager to compete against his McLaren F1 teammate Oscar Piastri. He addressed queries regarding whether he should receive preferential treatment in his pursuit of Max Verstappen.
Norris claimed the top starting spot for the Italian Grand Prix, and with championship contender Verstappen starting from seventh place, it could be a significant day for the McLaren driver in this season's title competition.
The subject of team orders has often been a hot topic for McLaren, especially in light of the events in Hungary.
Oscar Piastri secured the win at the Hungaroring after Lando Norris relinquished the lead due to a directive from the McLaren team.
Given McLaren's current performance compared to Red Bull, former 2016 F1 world champion Nico Rosberg has urged the team to prioritize their British driver, Norris, who is now a realistic contender for the title.
When questioned regarding team directives, Norris informed Sky following the qualifying session, "My goal is to compete. That's the reason I'm here. We've discussed all possibilities and have made all necessary preparations."
"If Oscar performs better in the race and overtakes me, it likely means he executed his strategy more effectively than I did."
"We understand what benefits the team most. Our goal is to achieve a one-two finish, and collaborating is the most effective approach to accomplish this."
As he anticipates Sunday's race, Norris remains cautious about the challenge Verstappen will present, despite Verstappen beginning in seventh position on the grid.
When evaluating Verstappen’s prospects, Norris mentioned that it is definitely a promising chance. He anticipates that Verstappen will move up the ranks swiftly and be right behind them soon, noting that their race speed appeared very impressive on Friday. They managed the graining and degradation better. Norris expects them to have a more optimistic outlook for tomorrow.
For some reason, they didn't appear to make progress during the qualifying rounds. Despite this, he still appeared fast. Even in the second qualifying session, he was very competitive and managed to outperform me, even on worn tires.
"His lead over Perez wasn’t as significant as usual, so perhaps he faced some difficulties or his laps weren’t optimal. There must be a reason for it, and we need to capitalize on that."
