Lando Norris Acknowledges Performance Gap to World Champion Level, Yet Eyes Title Challenge Against Verstappen
Lando Norris admits he hasn't showcased world champion-caliber performances
Lando Norris evaluates his potential to compete against Max Verstappen for the 2024 F1 championship.
Lando Norris has acknowledged that his performance in the initial half of the 2024 Formula 1 season hasn't reached the standards expected of a world champion.
The McLaren racer has consistently posed a challenge to Max Verstappen throughout this season, proving to be the most steadfast and formidable competitor for the Dutch driver and his Red Bull team.
Norris has acknowledged that despite achieving his first grand prix win in Miami, he has committed "more mistakes than he should have," resulting in the loss of "quite a few points" to Verstappen.
"Throughout the initial part of the season, my performance hasn't matched that of a world champion, plain and simple," Norris stated before the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, with Crash.net present in the paddock.
Occasionally, I have succeeded. I've competed in numerous races. However, minor obstacles have hindered my progress, and those setbacks are something I cannot tolerate. In the recent competitions, I haven't performed up to my required standard.
Norris, identifying the initial phases and first laps as critical areas for enhancement, also shared, "Despite my overall satisfaction with the season's progress, there were just a few too many errors and several points unnecessarily lost.
"This isn't the performance required to compete for a championship or challenge a driver of Max's caliber."
The 24-year-old British individual maintained that the criticism directed at him has not impacted him, acknowledging that at times it has been "entirely" justified.
"It's okay by me, it doesn't bother me. Feel free to speak your minds," he emphasized.
As long as I'm clear about my actions and those in my close-knit group, including my circle and team, understand as well, I'm content.
"I'm not concerned with the ideas or views others have. As long as I'm clear on my objectives and am achieving them, I welcome everyone to have their own thoughts."
"In my responses and during my discussions, I've consistently been truthful, even in moments when I haven't been."
Norris trails Verstappen by 78 points with 10 races remaining but remains confident he can contend with the three-time world champion for this year's championship.
"Absolutely, we have the capability," Norris affirmed, regarding McLaren's potential to bridge the 42-point gap separating them from Red Bull in the constructors' standings.
"As someone behind the wheel, it's achievable, yet the gap in points is significant, especially when you're up against Max. I'm trying to stay positive and believe that opportunities still exist.
"I understand that it's a considerable task and will pose a significant challenge, yet given my potential performance when everything aligns, I maintain hope in its feasibility."
