Kia EV9 Recall: Thousands of Electric SUVs Affected by Digital Gauge Glitch
Kia has issued a recall for 14,163 units of its EV9 electric SUVs due to a malfunction where the digital display behind the steering wheel may become non-functional during operation.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a collection of 2024 and 2025 car models underwent a software upgrade remotely in August, which seems to have caused a programming mistake. This error may occasionally result in the dashboard displays turning off, making it impossible for drivers to view important information such as speed, mileage, and turn signals.

The essential operational features of these signals remain intact, as pointed out by the NHTSA. However, the glitch in the software hinders the driver's ability to view this information, posing a risk to safety. When significant data or controls are obscured due to screen malfunctions, it's considered a safety hazard. This was the same reason why Tesla had to initiate a recall for 135,000 vehicles in 2021, to address defective touchscreens that could lead to the disappearance of the rearview camera's display among other features.
Kia acknowledged the problem following numerous grievances from consumers, however, they informed the NHTSA that they had no knowledge of any collisions, harm, or deaths as a result of the problem.
Upcoming 2024 model of the Kia
Kia is set to roll out a new remote software update to fix the problem, but owners have the option to visit dealers for the update as well. Notification letters from Kia will be sent to car owners on October 31. For further details, owners can reach out to Kia's customer support at 1-800-333-4542. The recall is listed under the reference number SC326.
The EV9 is experiencing another recall shortly after its introduction in the 2024 model year, where it was initially advertised with a range of up to 304 miles on a battery under 100 kwh, and a maximum price of $75,395, which kept it just below the limit for federal electric vehicle tax credits. An earlier recall also took place, involving a malfunction in the remote parking system found in 12,400 units that had this extra functionality.
