Kevin Magnussen Faces F1 Exit: Reputation and Penalties Haunt 2025 Prospects
F1 driver facing potential termination informed he “harmed reputation” with “reckless behavior”
Did Kevin Magnussen jeopardize his chances for a 2025 seat?
Kevin Magnussen is on the verge of leaving Formula 1 as he faces difficulties securing a spot for the 2025 season.
It has been officially announced that he will depart from Haas when his contract ends later this year, and spots for next year's cars are rapidly being taken.
With Carlos Sainz confirmed at Williams and speculation about Jack Doohan being the frontrunner for the Alpine seat, there may be no opportunities left for Magnussen.
"Kevin occasionally shows exceptional talent. I believe he still has a role to play," Eddie Jordan mentioned on the Formula For Success podcast.
“I would say that Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg have comparable driving styles and personalities."
Kevin's actions earlier this year, which were quite outrageous, have harmed his reputation.
“I’m not certain if that strikes a chord with the other team leaders.”
During the F1 Miami Grand Prix, Magnussen received four penalties in the sprint race, followed by a 10-second time penalty and two penalty points in the main event.
Penalties totaling 35 seconds for a race-long battle with Lewis Hamilton caused Magnussen to drop from 10th to 18th place on Saturday.
Magnussen acknowledged that he earned his penalties, an admission that Hamilton found to be "pretty cool."
However, Martin Brundle referred to his collision with Williams driver Logan Sargeant on Sunday as "simply foolish and avoidable."
With no options left for 2025, Magnussen appears to be on the verge of being cut from F1.
Sauber, which is set to rebrand as Audi in 2026, failed to secure Ferrari's Sainz, leaving an open spot alongside Hulkenberg for the upcoming year.
However, Jordan advised against making a commitment to Magnussen, stating, "In my opinion, it would be much smarter for them to wait."
"Why is there a need for an additional driver? They have the option to bring in external workers."
"All you’re really doing is accumulating a paycheck and creating a framework."
"Consider hiring Kevin if that’s your decision. It could be a good move in several ways."
However, simultaneously, Audi's financial experts will be evaluating the expenses associated with this.
There is an available position at Sauber, an open spot at Alpine, and one Red Bull seat yet to be confirmed for 2025, but Magnussen is not a top candidate for any of these opportunities.
