Who will be part of Badenoch's new 'fightback' team?

Kemi Badenoch, the recently elected leader of the Conservatives, has promised cabinet roles to all her competitors from the leadership contest – but who will stand with her at Conservative headquarters as she embarks on reforming the party?

Senior political reporter @joncraig

Saturday, November 2, 2024, 5:

Kemi Badenoch announced that the significant task of challenging Labour and gearing up for a Conservative administration starts right away. So, what lies ahead for the newly appointed leader?

Her initial assignment, which can prove challenging for party leaders due to some members declining their designated roles, is to select her key group of advisors, known as her shadow cabinet.

Discover more: Kemi Badenoch secures victory as the upcoming Conservative leader

During her campaign for leadership, she promised to appoint her five competitors to positions. However, she has encountered an early hurdle as James Cleverly has decided to move to the back benches.

Mr. Cleverly has aligned with the prominent ex-cabinet minister of the Conservative Party, Jeremy Hunt, who has previously managed four key positions including that of the chancellor, in choosing not to participate in the Badenoch comeback, at least for the time being.

Heading to the back benches as well, alongside Rishi Sunak, are his deputy Prime Minister, Sir Oliver Dowden, and, just moments before the leadership announcement, the former Secretary for Brexit, Health, and the Environment, Steve Barclay.

In the situation involving Sir Oliver and Mr. Barclay, it's possible they chose to leave before facing the possibility of being forced out. However, the valuable advice and expertise of Mr. Hunt, along with Mr. Cleverly's vigor and knack for campaigning, will be greatly felt in their absence.

Latest in Politics: Responses Emerge Following Announcement of New Opposition Leader

Ms. Badenoch's main task is to select a shadow chancellor. Whether in opposition or in government, this role should be filled by someone who closely aligns with the leader, as evidenced by pairs like David Cameron and George Osborne, or Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell.

Mel Stride, a contender for the leadership position, has been openly vying for the role for quite some time. However, the incoming leader might prefer someone newer to the scene. Andrew Griffith, known for his ambition and as one of her prominent supporters, is frequently mentioned as a likely candidate.

Is Robert Jenrick open to working with his successful opponent following their intense competition? Just this past weekend, Ms. Badenoch alleged that he was removed from his government role due to hints of misconduct.

It seems the only position he'd be interested in is that of shadow home secretary, so he can advance his strict immigration policies. However, she might prefer to introduce someone new in that role. Maybe Victoria Atkins, who has experience as a criminal barrister?

A potential role that could interest Mr. Jenrick is overseeing housing issues as a counterpart to deputy PM Angela Rayner. This is the same position Ms. Badenoch sought from Mr. Sunak following the election, subsequent to Michael Gove's resignation as an MP.

If she chooses not to include Mr. Jenrick in her shadow cabinet, she could potentially embarrass him by proposing a minor role within it, anticipating his refusal. Alternatively, she might prefer to keep him on board to prevent him from becoming a critic from the back benches.

Based on her proposal to include her competitors in her team, Tom Tugendhat appears poised for a significant position. With his experience in the military, security, and international relations, he might be appointed as either the shadow home secretary or potentially the shadow foreign secretary.

Ms. Badenoch's commitment to provide each of her competitors with a position in the shadow cabinet hints at a potential return for Priti Patel, an ex-cabinet minister well-regarded among the party's right wing.

Richard Fuller's tenure as temporary party chairman is expected to be brief. As the new leader begins their campaign, starting with the local elections in May, the role of party chairman will become crucial, especially in initiating reforms at the widely criticized party headquarters.

For an optimal video experience, it's recommended to use the Chrome browser.

Stuart Andrew, who has gained favor as an interim chief whip, might retain his position unless Ms. Badenoch chooses to appoint one of her trusted allies, a common practice among party leaders.

Delve deeper into UK politics: Exploring Kemi Badenoch's contentious history and the CPS's decision to transfer the case of a suspended Labour MP.

Following her outline of priorities in a Sunday morning television interview, Ms. Badenoch's first appearance in the Commons is expected to occur during Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday, where she will likely face Sir Keir Starmer.

She's clearly aiming to deliver a striking performance right off the bat, considering the importance of first impressions. Moreover, the contentious and widely criticized policies in Rachel Reeves' budget have certainly created ample opportunities for criticism.

In his final appearance in the Commons, Mr. Sunak demonstrated his skill with a forceful and highly acclaimed critique of the budget right after the chancellor concluded his remarks on Wednesday afternoon.

In her concise speech following her win, she discussed engaging not only Members of Parliament, but also Members of the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood, representatives of the Welsh Senedd, "our allies in Northern Ireland," and Conservative councillors and party members in the upcoming tasks.

This implies that she is ready to immediately start traveling—by car, train, and plane, likely—to visit various areas and energize party members, rallying their support for the Conservative comeback.

The counteroffensive begins today. She further discussed the party's future over the next five, 10, or 20 years. David Cameron, the previous Conservative leader to win an election from the opposition, took five years to ascend to the role of Prime Minister.

The path to a Conservative win in the upcoming election appears lengthy. Moreover, considering Ms. Badenoch's self-described directness—she stated on Sky News, "I'm someone who's very blunt… I'm not a wallflower"—it's expected to be a challenging journey.

Members of the Environment, Public Health, and Food Safety Committee held a session to interview Jessika Roswall, who is being considered for the role overseeing Environment, Water Resilience, and a Competitive Circular Economy.

In her introductory statements, Jessika Roswall of Sweden detailed her strategy as the nominee for Commissioner. She emphasized her dedication to maintaining consistency with EU environmental policies, focusing on executing and upholding the European Green Deal.

Sustainable economic model, pollution-free initiatives, and water sustainability.

Jessika Roswall pledged to introduce a circular economy package. This initiative will feature actions aimed at enhancing the single market for waste and recycled materials, while simultaneously promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable production within the European Union.

She revealed plans to update the EU's chemicals regulations, known as REACH, by introducing a new legislative package for the chemicals industry in 2025. Part of this initiative includes tackling PFAS, commonly referred to as "forever chemicals," with the goal of minimizing their impact on people and the environment. This effort will include implementing a ban on their use in consumer goods.

One of Ms. Roswall's main focuses will be developing a fresh EU approach to water resilience. The new initiatives will strive to ensure everyone has access to clean water, address water shortages, particularly in agriculture, boost the competitiveness of the EU's water sector, and counter the effects of climate change. Additionally, she committed to revising the EU's bioeconomy strategy and working to obtain EU funding for environmental goals in the upcoming multiannual financial framework (MFF).

Members of the European Parliament grilled the candidate from Sweden on her strategies for sustainable resource management, the enforcement of EU packaging regulations, and the revision of the REACH legislation related to public health. They also inquired about her stance on the zero-pollution initiative, the forestry industry, and the climate adaptation strategies she would advocate to combat the rise in extreme weather conditions.

Members of the European Parliament present at the meeting discussed several issues, including the potential establishment of nature credits, ensuring that nature-related laws are implemented thoroughly and promptly—particularly those concerning the restoration of natural habitats and the prevention of deforestation—and minimizing the agricultural sector's environmental footprint.

After the hearings are officially closed by the Conference of Presidents, the assessment letters will be made public.

Members of the European Parliament are set to vote on the entire group of Commissioners in a roll-call process, with a majority of votes required for approval. This election is planned for the plenary session in Strasbourg from November 25 to 28.

Magnus Brunner’s Vision for EU Security and Migration: Key Takeaways from the Commissioner Hearing

Published

on

By

Hearing of Commissioner-Designate Magnus Brunner

Share this page:

On Tuesday evening, the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs conducted an interview with Magnus Brunner, the Austrian nominee for the portfolio of Home Affairs and Migration.

Handling Migration

Brunner emphasized the need for migration to be managed with fair but firm rules, working closely with transit and origin countries under a "whole-route approach." He added that human rights are non-negotiable. An important aspect of his new role is the swift and complete implementation of the migration and asylum package, ensuring a balance between solidarity and responsibility. When asked by lawmakers about possible infringement procedures for missing deadlines, Brunner stated he was prepared to initiate such actions if required.

Protection of External Borders

To counter attempts to use migrants for political purposes at the EU's eastern borders, Brunner committed to ensuring a unified response by employing all available means, while safeguarding the values of the EU.

Maintaining the Schengen Area

Press Statement

At the conclusion of the hearing, Javier Zarzalejos, who chairs the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and represents the EPP from Spain, addressed the media outside the meeting room. The video of his statement can be accessed here.

Upcoming Actions

Based on the committee's suggestions, the Conference of Presidents, which includes EP President Metsola and the leaders of the political groups, will conduct the final assessment and officially conclude the hearings on November 21. After the Conference of Presidents announces the conclusion of all hearings, the assessment letters will be made public.

EU Commissioner-Designate Hadja Lahbib Faces Scrutiny on Equality and Crisis Management Strategies

By

Hearing for Commissioner-Designate Hadja Lahbib

Distribute this information:

The Committees on Development, Women's Rights, Civil Liberties, and Environment conducted a questioning session with Hadja Lahbib, who has been nominated for the role overseeing Preparedness, Crisis Management, and Equality.

Fairness

In her opening remarks, Belgian Commissioner-designate Hadja Lahbib emphasized the importance of ensuring that the recently established equality laws are effectively enforced throughout the EU. She highlighted the need for the complete adoption of the Istanbul Convention as part of this effort.

On March 8, 2025, coinciding with International Women’s Day, she revealed plans to introduce a Women’s Rights Roadmap. This initiative is intended to act as a guiding framework for the Gender Equality Strategy that will be implemented starting the following year. Additionally, she committed to specific actions aimed at revitalizing the LGBTIQ+ Equality Strategy beyond 2025. These actions include offering positive incentives, prohibiting conversion therapies, and introducing a new strategy to combat racism.

Addressing inquiries from Members of the European Parliament, she refuted claims that the equality portfolio would be diminished and emphasized that she would be allocated resources equal to those of the current Equality Commissioner, Helena Dalli. She pledged to make progress on various matters, including the EU's implementation of a consent-based definition of rape, abortion rights, maternal surrogacy, children's rights, and poverty issues. Her approach will involve dialogue and raising awareness, with a strong focus on respecting the rights of women, children, and other vulnerable populations.

Readiness

To better handle future emergencies, Ms. Lahbib urged the European Union to adopt a comprehensive approach that enhances collaboration and includes all societal sectors, especially the public. Building on the Niinistö report's recommendations to enhance EU civil and military preparedness, she intends to strengthen key solidarity tools like the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, the Emergency Response Coordination Centre, and the rescEU strategic reserve. Additionally, Ms. Lahbib aims to formulate a new plan for medical countermeasures to tackle public health risks, which would involve collective purchasing and stockpiling.

In response to inquiries from Members of the European Parliament about improving the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to better support vulnerable groups and strengthen unity among EU nations, Ms. Lahbib proposed a comprehensive approach. This strategy would integrate both civil and military defense measures, address various kinds of crises such as health and environmental emergencies, and prioritize not just reactive measures but also preventative ones.

Assistance for Humanitarian Needs and Emergency Response

Ms. Lahbib plans to advocate for a unified strategy across the Commission to assist vulnerable nations facing humanitarian emergencies, focusing on a more coordinated use of the humanitarian-peace-development triple nexus. To address the shortfall in humanitarian assistance, she will urge EU member countries to boost their contributions, seek out new donors, and promote greater involvement of private sector entities in the creation and distribution of humanitarian aid.

Addressing inquiries from Members of the European Parliament regarding the Middle East, as well as the conditions in Gaza and Lebanon, she supported the European Union's impartial stance on providing humanitarian assistance. She emphasized the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law and upheld the values outlined in the Geneva Conventions.

Media briefing

Following the hearing, committee leaders Barry Andrews from the Development Committee (Renew, Ireland), Lina Galvez from the Women’s Rights Committee (S&D, Spain), Javier Zarzalejos from the Environment Committee (EPP, Spain), and Antonio Decaro from the Civil Liberties Committee (S&D, Italy) addressed the media outside the conference room.

Upcoming Actions

The leaders and coordinators from the four relevant committees will convene immediately following the hearing to evaluate the abilities and qualifications of the Commissioner-designate.

Following the suggestions from the committees, the Conference of Presidents, which includes EP President Metsola and the leaders of political groups, plans to perform the ultimate assessment and officially conclude the hearings on November 21. After the Conference of Presidents finalizes the closure of all hearings, the evaluation letters from the committees will be made available to the public.

Members of the European Parliament are set to vote on the complete group of Commissioners, requiring a majority through a roll-call vote. This event is planned for the plenary session in Strasbourg from November 25 to 28.

On Wednesday, the Monetary and Economic Affairs Committee conducted an inquiry with Maria Luis Albuquerque, who has been nominated for the role overseeing Financial Services and the Savings and Investments Union.

In her opening remarks, Maria Luis Albuquerque from Portugal committed to prioritizing the stability and integrity of the European Union's financial system, considering it essential for building a robust and competitive economy in Europe.

Should her confirmation proceed, Ms. Albuquerque expressed her commitment to fostering innovation and promoting inclusive economic growth. She aims to enhance social mobility and empower consumers. Her goals include advancing the Savings and Investment Union, ensuring consistent oversight across borders, and increasing investment financing options. She vowed to maintain a balanced strategy in digital finance, to build confidence in the financial sector, and to empower European citizens to engage with the financial system equitably, enabling them to manage their financial futures.

To enhance the EU's competitiveness, the nominee for Commissioner intends to prioritize facilitating the smooth movement of capital and decreasing regulatory challenges, with particular attention to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Furthermore, she revealed her commitment to intensifying efforts against financial crimes, such as money laundering and terrorist financing, by emphasizing the establishment of the EU's Anti-Money Laundering Authority.

Ms. Albuquerque also pledged to build a cooperative partnership with the European Parliament through frequent and transparent discussions.

Economic resilience, safeguarding deposits, and eco-friendly financial practices

A number of Members of the European Parliament raised inquiries with the Commissioner-designate concerning the EU's financial stability and the competitiveness of its banking sector, particularly in view of the postponed rollout of the Basel III international standards and the European Deposit Insurance Scheme. They also inquired about sustainable finance, emphasizing the need for accurately labeled green investment products and highlighting the crucial role of private investments in advancing green and digital transitions.

In her reply, Ms. Albuquerque expressed her intent to urge global collaborators to adopt Basel III standards. She vowed to enhance the safeguarding of deposits within Europe and seek a middle ground on the Crisis Management and Deposit Insurance (CMDI) framework. Additionally, she promised to advance a sustainable finance system that accommodates smaller market players by reducing the demands for reporting and cutting down on bureaucratic hurdles.

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) brought up several concerns, including the need to ensure fair competition while expanding the capital markets union and providing equal investment opportunities for all citizens. They emphasized the importance of ensuring that the digital shift in payment systems is inclusive. Many representatives expressed worries about the increasing influence of non-bank financial institutions within the EU and called for measures to manage this risk. They also inquired about the dangers associated with securitization and strategies to safely leverage it to lessen businesses' reliance on banks for project financing. In response to requests for concrete ways to enhance the Capital Market Union, Ms. Albuquerque suggested more unified oversight and pledged to eliminate barriers to market-driven consolidation through more consistent tax policies.

Balancing Profit and Principles: Jozef Síkela’s Vision for EU’s Global Gateway and Development Policy

Published

on

By

Examination of Commissioner Nominee Jozef Síkela

Distribute this information:

On Wednesday, the Development Committee conducted an inquiry with Jozef Síkela, the nominee from the Czech Republic, regarding his suitability for the International Partnerships position.

Worldwide Access Point

In his opening remarks, Jozef Síkela, who has been nominated as the Commissioner for International Partnerships, expressed that his strategy for the EU's Global Gateway project would involve striking a balance between financial gain and ethical standards. He emphasized that the EU should utilize public-private collaborations, minimize investment risks, and draw in private funding to stimulate investments and address the shortfall in development aid.

Mr. Síkela emphasized that the European Union's development strategy ought to concentrate on addressing the fundamental reasons behind irregular migration, preventing conflicts, and promoting sound governance. Additionally, attention should be directed towards the Least Developed Countries, enhancing ties with Africa, and aligning with the goals of the EU’s Green Deal. He further mentioned that the EU needs to adopt a more proactive stance in its partnerships with other countries, particularly in light of the increasing competition from more assertive rivals in areas such as Africa.

The European Union's goals include eliminating poverty.

Members of the European Parliament concentrated their inquiries on the strategies of the Commissioner-designate regarding the Global Gateway. They questioned how he plans to promote the initiative to favor the EU's economic interests and addressed a potential conflict in its dual goals of expanding market access for the EU and alleviating poverty. Mr. Síkela responded by stating that he did not see any conflict, emphasizing the importance of engaging the private sector to foster sustainable economic development in partner nations.

Education and the alleviation of debt

Addressing the concerns raised by Members of the European Parliament regarding transparency and accountability in the European Union's development aid—covering areas such as expenditures, parliamentary oversight, and human rights issues—Mr. Síkela emphasized that ensuring the effective use of aid funds will be one of his main priorities.

Addressing concerns among Members of the European Parliament about the EU's diminishing emphasis on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Mr. Síkela emphasized the crucial role of private investment in achieving many of these objectives. He also pledged to uphold the EU's goal of allocating 10% of its aid budget to education and to explore possibilities for debt relief for partner nations, contingent upon consultations with allied donor countries.

Some Members of the European Parliament brought up the idea of leveraging development policy to tackle migration issues. They suggested tying aid to the condition of migrants returning to their home countries. In response, Mr. Síkela stated that he would adopt a "whole-of-route approach" while ensuring adherence to EU principles.

Magnus Brunner’s Vision for EU Security and Migration: A Comprehensive Strategy for 2025

Published

on

By

Hearing for the Nominee Commissioner Magnus Brunner

Share this page:

On Tuesday evening, the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice, and Home Affairs conducted an interview with Magnus Brunner, the Austrian candidate for the Home Affairs and Migration portfolio.

Addressing the primary concerns of lawmakers regarding internal security and border control, Brunner committed to presenting a comprehensive internal security strategy in the first half of 2025. He also pledged to expand Europol's mandate and enhance the port alliance to combat transnational organized crime.

Managing Migration

Brunner emphasized that migration should be managed with fair yet strict regulations, working closely with transit and origin countries as part of a "whole-route concept." He also stressed that human rights are non-negotiable. A key aspect of his new role is to ensure the swift and complete implementation of the migration and asylum package, maintaining a balance between solidarity and responsibility. When asked by lawmakers about potential infringement procedures if deadlines are not met, Brunner stated that he is prepared to initiate such actions if needed.

When asked about specifics of a new legislative proposal concerning deportations, Brunner stated that presenting this as a priority in 2025 is planned, with an emphasis on implementing streamlined processes.

Protection of External Borders

Statement to the Press

Based on the committee's recommendations, the Conference of Presidents, which includes EP President Metsola and the leaders of political groups, will make the final assessment and officially conclude the hearings on November 21. After the Conference of Presidents announces the conclusion of all hearings, the evaluation letters will be made public.

The election of the entire College of Commissioners by the Members of the European Parliament, requiring a majority of the votes cast in a roll-call vote, is scheduled to take place during the plenary session from November 25 to 28 in Strasbourg.

Hadja Lahbib Faces Scrutiny: Advancing Equality and Crisis Management in EU’s Future Agenda

Published

on

By

Hearing for Nominee Hadja Lahbib

Distribute this information:

The Development, Women’s Rights, Civil Liberties, and Environment Committees conducted an inquiry with Hadja Lahbib, the nominee for the role overseeing Preparedness, Crisis Management, and Equality.

Fairness

In her opening remarks, Hadja Lahbib, the Belgian Commissioner-designate, emphasized the importance of ensuring that the key equality laws passed in recent years are effectively enforced throughout the European Union. This includes the complete execution of the Istanbul Convention.

In a recent announcement, she revealed plans to introduce a Roadmap for Women's Rights on International Women's Day, March 8, 2025. This roadmap is intended to act as a guiding framework for next year's Gender Equality Strategy. Furthermore, she committed to implementing specific measures aimed at revitalizing the post-2025 LGBTIQ+ Equality Strategy. These measures will include positive incentives, a prohibition on conversion therapies, and the development of a new anti-racism strategy.

When questioned by Members of the European Parliament, she refuted claims that the equality portfolio is being diminished. She emphasized that her resources will match those available to the current Equality Commissioner, Helena Dalli. She pledged to push forward on particular topics, including the EU’s establishment of a consent-based definition of rape, abortion rights, maternal surrogacy, children's rights, and poverty. Her approach will focus on dialogue, raising awareness, and most importantly, respecting the individual rights of women, children, and other vulnerable populations.

Being Ready

To better handle future emergencies, Ms. Lahbib urged the European Union to adopt a comprehensive strategy that enhances collaboration and engages all sectors of society, especially the public. Drawing from the Niinistö report on bolstering EU preparedness both in civil and military capacities, she aims to strengthen key EU solidarity tools such as the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, the Emergency Response Coordination Centre, and the rescEU strategic reserve. Additionally, Ms. Lahbib intends to formulate a new plan for medical countermeasures to tackle public health risks, incorporating joint procurement and the establishment of stockpiles.

In response to inquiries from Members of the European Parliament about improving the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to better aid vulnerable groups and boost solidarity within the EU, Ms. Lahbib proposed a comprehensive approach. This strategy would integrate both civil and military defence measures, addressing a wide range of disasters, including health-related and environmental crises. The focus would be on both managing emergencies and preventing them from occurring.

Assistance for Humanitarian Needs and Emergency Response

Ms. Lahbib aims to advocate for a unified strategy across the Commission to assist countries facing humanitarian emergencies, with a special focus on effectively applying the humanitarian-peace-development triple nexus. To address the shortfall in humanitarian assistance, she plans to urge EU member nations to boost their financial contributions, seek out additional donors, and promote greater involvement from the private sector in the creation and distribution of humanitarian aid.

In response to questions from Members of the European Parliament regarding the Middle East, particularly the conditions in Gaza and Lebanon, she supported the EU's impartial stance on providing humanitarian assistance. She emphasized the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law and upheld the principles outlined in the Geneva Conventions.

Media briefing

Following the hearing, the leaders of the Development, Women's Rights, Environment, and Civil Liberties committees—Barry Andrews from the Renew group in Ireland, Lina Galvez from the Socialists and Democrats in Spain, Javier Zarzalejos from the European People's Party in Spain, and Antonio Decaro from the Socialists and Democrats in Italy—addressed the media outside the conference room.

Future actions

The leaders and coordinators of the four relevant committees will convene promptly following the hearing to evaluate the abilities and credentials of the nominated Commissioner.

Following the suggestions from the committees, the Conference of Presidents—which includes EP President Metsola and the leaders of the political groups—will carry out the ultimate assessment and officially conclude the hearings on November 21. After this declaration, the evaluation letters from the committees will be made available to the public.

Members of the European Parliament are set to vote on the entire group of Commissioners during a roll-call at the plenary session scheduled in Strasbourg from November 25 to 28.

Maria Luis Albuquerque Faces Scrutiny in EU Financial Services Hearing: Promises Stability, Innovation, and Consumer Empowerment

Published

on

By

Interview with Nominee Maria Luis Albuquerque

Share this article:

On Wednesday, the Monetary and Economic Affairs Committee conducted an interview with Maria Luis Albuquerque, who has been nominated for the role overseeing the Financial Services and the Savings and Investments Union portfolio.

In her opening remarks, Maria Luis Albuquerque of Portugal vowed to prioritize the stability and integrity of the European Union's financial system, viewing it as the cornerstone for fostering a robust and competitive economy in Europe.

Upon confirmation, Ms. Albuquerque stated her commitment to fostering innovation and promoting inclusive development, while also advocating for social mobility and consumer empowerment. She vowed to advance the Savings and Investment Union, ensure consistent oversight across borders, and create more avenues for investment funding. Ms. Albuquerque also promised to adopt a balanced strategy in digital finance, aiming to build trust in the financial system. Furthermore, she seeks to empower European citizens to engage in the financial system equitably, allowing them to manage their financial destinies.

To enhance the EU's competitiveness, the Commissioner-designate intends to concentrate on facilitating smooth capital movement and lessening regulatory constraints, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises. Moreover, she revealed her commitment to intensifying efforts against financial crimes, notably money laundering and terrorist financing, by prioritizing the establishment of the EU's Anti-Money Laundering Authority.

Ms. Albuquerque vowed to cultivate a cooperative partnership with the European Parliament by engaging in frequent and transparent discussions.

Economic security, safeguarding deposits, and enduring financial practices

A number of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) inquired of the Commissioner-designate regarding the European Union's financial stability and the banking sector's competitiveness, particularly in view of the postponed enactment of Basel III international guidelines and the European Deposit Insurance Scheme. They also raised issues related to sustainable finance and the accurate labeling of environmentally-friendly investment products, highlighting the crucial role of private sector investments in driving green and digital transitions.

In reply, Ms. Albuquerque expressed her intention to urge global partners to adopt Basel III standards. She promised to enhance the safeguarding of deposits across Europe and to seek a middle ground regarding the Crisis Management and Deposit Insurance (CMDI) framework. Additionally, she vowed to advocate for a sustainable finance system tailored to smaller market players, aiming to reduce reporting duties and administrative complexities.

Members of the European Parliament brought up several concerns, including ensuring fair competition while advancing the capital markets union, providing equal investment opportunities to all citizens, and ensuring that everyone benefits from the digital transformation of payment systems. Many participants expressed apprehension about the increasing influence of non-bank financial entities within the EU and called for measures to mitigate this risk. They also raised questions about the potential dangers of securitization and how it could be used safely to lessen business reliance on banks for funding projects. In response to a request for practical examples to enhance the Capital Market Union, Ms. Albuquerque proposed more unified supervision and pledged to eliminate obstacles to market-led consolidation by implementing more standardized tax policies.

After this declaration, the letters detailing the evaluations will be made public.

Balancing Profit and Principles: Jozef Síkela’s Vision for the EU’s Global Gateway and Development Policies

Published

on

By

Jozef Síkela’s Confirmation Hearing

The Development Committee conducted a hearing on Wednesday with Jozef Síkela, the nominee from the Czech Republic for the role in International Partnerships.

Worldwide Portal

In his opening remarks, Jozef Síkela, the nominee for the role of Commissioner for International Partnerships, expressed that his strategy for the EU's Global Gateway initiative would involve maintaining a balance between profitability and ethical standards. He emphasized that the EU should utilize public-private collaborations, reduce investment risks, and draw in private funding to stimulate investments and address the shortfall in development aid.

Mr. Síkela emphasized that the European Union's development strategy ought to prioritize addressing the fundamental issues leading to irregular migration, preventing conflicts, and promoting effective governance. He highlighted the importance of concentrating efforts on the Least Developed Countries and enhancing ties with African nations. Furthermore, he stressed the need for alignment with the EU's Green Deal aims. Mr. Síkela also suggested that the EU should adopt a more confident approach when engaging with partner countries, especially in light of the presence of other, more assertive competitors in areas such as Africa.

Eliminating poverty, priorities of the European

Members of the European Parliament concentrated their inquiries on the Commissioner-designate's strategy regarding the Global Gateway. They questioned how he plans to move the initiative forward to serve the economic interests of the European Union and addressed a seemingly conflicting goal of both expanding markets for the EU and eliminating poverty. Mr. Síkela countered by saying he did not see any contradiction, emphasizing the importance of engaging the private sector to foster sustainable economic development in partner nations.

Financial assistance and learning opportunities

Addressing the European Parliament members' worries regarding the openness and responsibility in the allocation of EU development aid—which covers expenditure, parliamentary supervision, and breaches of human rights—Mr. Síkela emphasized that ensuring the effective use of aid funds will be his main focus.

Addressing concerns from Members of the European Parliament about the EU's declining emphasis on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Mr. Síkela emphasized the crucial role of private investment in achieving these objectives. He also pledged to uphold the EU's commitment to allocate 10% of its aid budget to education and to explore possibilities for debt relief for partner nations, contingent upon talks with other supportive donor countries.

Several Members of the European Parliament brought up the topic of utilizing development policy to manage migration. This included the idea of tying aid assistance to the obligation of returning migrants. In response, Mr. Síkela stated that he would adopt a comprehensive strategy that aligns with the values of the European Union.
