Jorge Martin Secures Crucial Victory at Chaotic Indonesian MotoGP as Marquez and Bastianini Bow Out
Jorge Martin clinches victory at the Indonesian MotoGP, while Marc Marquez and Enea Bastianini fail to finish the race. The championship front-runner secures his first crucial Sunday win since May.
Jorge Martin, who currently tops the MotoGP standings, maintained his lead throughout the tumultuous Indonesian Grand Prix. Meanwhile, Pedro Acosta's second-place finish might be jeopardized due to a potential penalty related to tyre pressure.
Following his crash in Saturday's sprint race, which handed the victory to his main title competitor Francesco Bagnaia, Martin took control and won the grand prix.
The Pramac rider dominated the race, maintaining the lead from the start and finishing ahead of Tech3 GASGAS rider Acosta by 1.4 seconds. This victory temporarily extends his championship lead to 21 points over Bagnaia, who secured third place.
Acosta is under investigation for potentially violating tyre pressure regulations, which may result in a 16-second time penalty if the infraction is confirmed.
This development could significantly affect the race, elevating Bagnaia to the second position and reducing Martin's lead in the championship to just 17 points.
Enea Bastianini and Marc Marquez's chances for the championship appear to be finished following the Indonesian GP. Bastianini crashed while leading the race in third place, and Marquez encountered a technical problem.
At the start, Martin smoothly took the lead, with Bastianini and Acosta following closely, and Bagnaia managed to bounce back from a bad start to secure fourth place, just in front of Marquez.
During Turn 3, an accident caused by Jack Miller (KTM) led to the removal of Honda's Luca Marini, Gresini's Alex Marquez, and Aprilia's Aleix Espargaro from the race. After reviewing the incident, the stewards decided not to take any further action.
At the conclusion of the first lap, Franco Morbidelli (Pramac) and Marco Bezzecchi (VR46) had relegated Bagnaia to sixth place. Two laps after that, Acosta overtook Bastianini at Turn 16.
Martin established a 1.3-second lead after his latest pass, as the two official Ducati riders faced difficulties maintaining speed in the initial laps.
Although Martin's lead varied with Acosta trailing him, he was never in significant danger from the Tech3 newcomer.
Starting from approximately the eighth lap, Bastianini's speed picked up significantly, making the Italian rider the main contender challenging Martin's chances of winning.
After Bastianini passed Bezzecchi on the 13th lap and Morbidelli on the 17th lap, he quickly distanced himself from that pack and began closing in on Acosta, who was in second place.
As he reduced the gap to approximately 1.5 seconds at the beginning of lap 21, Bastianini experienced a crash at Turn 1.
This increased Bagnaia’s chances of securing a podium finish, as the world champion moved into third place on lap 23.
Martin crossed the finish line 1.4 seconds before Acosta, while Bagnaia secured the third position. However, Bagnaia could move up to second place if Acosta is disqualified from his fourth podium finish of the year.
A penalty given to Acosta will elevate Franco Morbidelli to his first podium finish in a grand prix since Spain 2021. The Pramac rider secured fourth place ahead of Bezzecchi, as both riders successfully utilized the soft front tire.
Maverick Vinales secured the sixth position riding for the factory Aprilia team, while Fabio Quartararo of Yamaha finished in seventh place.
Brad Binder finished in eighth place riding for KTM, though he is subject to a tire pressure investigation. Johann Zarco achieved Honda's top finish of the year, coming in ninth for LCR. Raul Fernandez, representing Trackhouse, rounded out the top ten.
Takaaki Nakagami from LCR and Alex Rins from Yamaha rounded out the top 12, being the final riders to be classified.
Tech3's Augusto Fernandez, Honda's Joan Mir, and VR46's Fabio Di Giannantonio all experienced crashes during the race. Additionally, Marc Marquez was forced to retire from the grand prix on lap 12 due to a suspected engine failure.
With Bastianini and Marquez failing to finish, they now trail Martin by 75 and 78 points respectively, effectively ending their chances for the title with only five rounds left.
