Jorge Martin Overcomes Past Demons to Claim Victory in Thrilling Indonesian MotoGP

Jorge Martin confesses to having lingering thoughts during the Indonesian MotoGP, saying, "I achieved my payback!"

MotoGP championship front-runner Jorge Martin revealed that past crashes at the Indonesian Grand Prix haunted him mentally as he powered through to clinch victory on Sunday.

During the 2023 Indonesian GP, the Pramac racer lost control and crashed despite holding a strong lead. In a similar incident this year, he fell from the leading position on the first lap of Saturday's sprint race.

Starting from pole position on Sunday in the 27-lap grand prix, Martin "avenged" his previous performance at the Mandalika track, securing his third main race victory of the season.

Following the race, Martin mentioned that thoughts of past accidents were on his mind halfway through the grand prix.

"Yes, I avenged Mandalika," Martin remarked, having once more extended his championship lead.

"Following the accident last season and another one yesterday, today's race proved to be quite challenging."

"By the 13th lap, my thoughts were haunted at turn 11, and then at every lap in turn 16."

"I was making a concerted effort to be cautious. There was a significant side wind in that area."

"I was having difficulty making turns; it felt similar to riding a scooter. I realized I was falling behind Acosta in that section, but my plan was to compensate by pushing harder in other areas."

"I made sure to carefully assess the situation at the beginning of the race and then gradually increased my effort with each lap."

“Acosta was amazing and kept the pressure on. Even when I tried to create some distance, he managed to stay within one second of me.

"He's definitely strong, and I'm pleased with how well I did."

During the first half of the race, Martin faced significant pressure from Tech3’s Pedro Acosta, with his lead decreasing to less than eight-tenths of a second at one point.

The Pramac racer ultimately crossed the finish line with a 1.4-second lead, although this gap had widened to more than two seconds before Martin eased up on the last lap.

"I always made an effort to stay composed," he remarked.

"I aimed to be the best I could be, and regardless of whether the competitor behind is a fraction of a second away, it's crucial to maintain consistency in my actions."

"I didn't attempt to adjust or exert more or less effort. I was giving my all, so it was Pedro who was closing the gap and making errors."

"I consistently aimed to do the same thing. This is my approach to improving."

Martin currently holds a provisional 21-point lead in the championship. However, an upcoming investigation into tyre pressure may result in Acosta being relegated from second place, potentially elevating Francesco Bagnaia to that position.

This result would reduce Martin's lead in the championship to 17 points ahead of Bagnaia.
