Jordan Questions Alonso’s Form Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles: A Psychological Comparison to Hamilton
Fernando Alonso is 'not even close' to Lewis Hamilton's skill level, according to a comparison. "I also ponder what these drivers are thinking mentally."
Former Formula 1 team principal Eddie Jordan holds the opinion that Fernando Alonso is not reaching the performance level he believes he is capable of achieving.
Following a relatively robust beginning to the year, where they competed against top teams such as Mercedes and Ferrari, Aston Martin has once again fallen behind in the rankings, similar to their performance in 2023.
Aston Martin's slowdown in speed appears to have happened at the same time as Alonso's own decline in performance.
In 14 races, Alonso has been outpaced in qualifying by Lance Stroll five times – a feat that only occurred three times throughout the whole 2023 season.
Although Alonso is still leading the rankings, his advantage isn't as substantial as it was the previous year.
During an appearance on the Formula for Success podcast, Jordan expressed doubts about the recent performances of the two-time world champion.
Jordan noted that Alonso was impressive right from the start of the year.
"Right now, I need to check where he finishes to determine if he ranks within the top 10."
"While he performed admirably in Belgium yesterday, securing additional points for Aston, he still falls short of the high standards he believes he can achieve."
Aston Martin began the previous year in excellent shape, frequently emerging as Red Bull's closest competitor.
Jordan believes that the decline in Aston Martin's performance is affecting Alonso's mental state, comparing it to the success experienced by Lewis Hamilton.
He added that, in his opinion, he believes he is just as talented as Lewis Hamilton.
"He had hoped to compete against Lewis this year, but frankly, that hasn't taken place and it doesn't seem likely to occur for the rest of the year."
"I also consider the psychological aspects of what happens in the minds of these individuals."
