Johnny Herbert Declares Sergio Perez ‘Damaged Goods’ as Red Bull Ponders Future Amid 2024 Season Struggles
Johnny Herbert describes Sergio Perez as "damaged goods" and "mentally broken." Will Perez be able to regain his form in the latter part of the 2024 F1 season?
Former Formula 1 driver Johnny Herbert thinks that Sergio Perez is currently "mentally shattered," even though Red Bull has expressed ongoing support for him after the summer hiatus.
Red Bull announced to Crash.net that Perez will remain with the team for the latter part of the season.
Formula 1 is now entering a summer hiatus, taking a three-week break before the Dutch Grand Prix, which will take place at the end of August.
Prior to the formal closure, Red Bull's head, Christian Horner, convened with Helmut Marko to deliberate on Perez's prospects.
Perez will continue to stay with Red Bull, partnering with Verstappen, for the time being.
Nonetheless, Herbert thinks that Perez has not shown any progress, labeling him as "damaged goods."
"Sergio Perez once again had the poorest performance among the drivers this weekend. Starting from the front row, he fell back, which is certainly not what teams anticipate from their drivers," he remarked.
"It's terrible to admit, but right now, it's as if he's a damaged product. Mentally, he's a shattered individual."
Typically, contracts include a performance clause, which might enable Red Bull to end Perez’s contract due to his subpar performances over the past few years.
Herbert believes that Red Bull should have chosen Yuki Tsunoda instead of Daniel Ricciardo, who was initially considered the top candidate.
"Red Bull should swap Perez for Yuki Tsunoda, as Daniel Ricciardo doesn't meet the mark," he stated. "Has Daniel proven he deserves a spot at Red Bull? I don't believe so, at least not at this point. He hasn't shown enough strength compared to Yuki Tsunoda. Yuki is the driver I would choose. His performance has gotten better."
"It wouldn't be the same Daniel facing Max as before. Max is under immense pressure now. The era of Red Bull's past dominance is over. That isn't happening anymore. The burden is entirely on him."
"In order to accumulate the maximum points, you require two drivers, particularly if you are unable to secure race victories like Max has consistently achieved over the past few seasons."
"When a team finds itself in that position, it needs to make a change, but the options are limited. It seems likely to come down to either Ricciardo, who is somewhat uncertain, or Yuki."
