James Vowles ‘Surprised’ as Red Bull, Mercedes Overlook Carlos Sainz: Williams Seals Major Signing
James Vowles expressed surprise that both Red Bull and Mercedes did not consider Carlos Sainz for their teams. He mentioned that although it was a tough choice, he would indeed pair Carlos with Max.
James Vowles, the head of Williams F1, admitted he was "surprised" that Red Bull and Mercedes did not consider Carlos Sainz, praising him as one of the "top four" drivers currently racing.
On Monday, Williams revealed that they have secured a two-year contract with Sainz.
Williams has scored a significant victory as Sainz, who is considered one of the top drivers in the field, has shown strong performances against Lando Norris at McLaren and Charles Leclerc at Ferrari.
Sainz drew significant attention from both Audi and Alpine, but decided to become part of Vowles' promising endeavor with Williams.
During a virtual press conference on Tuesday, which included media outlets like Crash.net, Vowles confessed that if he were in Red Bull's shoes, he would have secured Sainz as a teammate for Max Verstappen.
He stated that when you're in Red Bull's situation, with the constructors' championship on the line, it's a tough call, but he would indeed pair Carlos with Max.
Vowles acknowledged that his previous team, Mercedes, faces more challenges due to their inconsistent performance.
"If you're with Mercedes, it's a tough decision," he said. "They've fluctuated between not being competitive, where it would be logical to focus on future talent like Antonelli, and being very competitive, which makes it harder to decide whether to invest in established or new prospects."
Given the situation, if Mercedes has reached that conclusion, they undoubtedly possess much more detailed information than I do. It's likely they are very confident about the path they are taking. I can't say for certain if this involves Max or Kimi. However, it's clear they are making this decision with careful consideration and intelligence.
"If Red Bull has chosen this course of action, there are undoubtedly reasons for it that I am not privy to. As multiple world champions, they carefully consider their decisions. Nonetheless, I found it unexpected."
By acquiring Sainz, Williams has secured one of the most formidable driver teams in the competition.
Vowles considers Sainz to be one of the top four drivers, and occasionally even the second best.
"To put it briefly, yes, I was surprised because I consider him to be among the top four, if not sometimes the second-best driver on the grid," he stated. "Why wouldn't you want someone like that on your team? From my perspective, the competition is becoming more and more intense, so the slight edge a driver can provide is crucial. And I don't just mean in terms of performance."
"Each team he has joined has seen considerable improvement, and after conversing with him over the past nine months, I understand why."
"Honestly, it's been happening almost daily or at least weekly. My partner Rachel has been quite puzzled about the nature of our relationship, especially when compared to my connection with Carlos. What I've come to understand about Carlos is that he is incredibly driven. He goes to great lengths to not only improve himself but also to elevate the entire team. That's impressive."
"That value exceeds his driving capability. It's worth it if it advances the team by an equivalent margin."
