Inside the Shake-Up: Hulkenberg Reacts to Audi’s Strategic Overhaul and Key Management Appointments
Nico Hulkenberg discloses discussions regarding significant changes in Audi's management
"The unexpected part was the complete shift in strategy"
Nico Hulkenberg stated that he reached out to Jonathan Wheatley and Mattia Binotto following Audi's significant management restructuring.
Nico Hulkenberg is set to participate in the F1 Dutch Grand Prix this weekend, representing Haas. Throughout the season, he has quietly exceeded expectations.
Next season, he will transition to Sauber, which is set to become Audi in 2026. However, the major German company has implemented significant alterations to its leadership team.
Red Bull's sporting director, Wheatley, is set to become the new team principal at Audi, and former Ferrari team principal, Binotto, will take on the roles of COO and CTO.
Andreas Seidl, the Chief Executive Officer, and Oliver Hoffman, the Chairman, are no longer with Audi.
Nico Hulkenberg acknowledged at Zandvoort that the departure of Seidl and Hoffman was a major and unforeseen shift in strategy, which came as a significant surprise. Crash.net reporters are currently on-site at the event.
Hulkenberg commented on Wheatley, stating, "He’s highly skilled and well-qualified, having worked with the leading Red Bull team. His addition will significantly benefit our team and project. I reached out to him post-summer break."
He also reached out to Binotto, who is making a comeback to F1 after previously heading Ferrari.
"He's just beginning now, post-shutdown," Hulkenberg commented.
"It's still early, and he is just getting started. He needs to get a sense of the current state of affairs and understand how the various departments operate."
Nevertheless, the German driver emphasized that his attention is still on his present team, Haas, rather than on his future employer's activities.
When questioned about how closely he has been following the developments at Audi, Hulkenberg responded, "I haven’t really paid much attention. It’s mostly just a few phone calls, nothing that requires significant effort or focus."
"Engaging with others invariably leads to gaining new information. It's consistently intriguing to stay updated on the latest happenings in the paddock."
"However, my full commitment remains with this season. Our goal is to recover this weekend and accumulate as many points as possible in the upcoming races to clinch seventh place."
"We have aspirations of reaching sixth place, but it will be challenging."
"The outcome isn't solely in our hands; it also hinges on RB's performance. If they play well and score, it will pose a challenge. However, if they falter, the dynamics and overall scenario could shift."
Haas, who ended up last in the constructors' championship last season, have experienced a revival this year.
Hulkenberg's seasoned driving skills play a crucial role in their recent improvement.
The 37-year-old has earned points five times.
The progression of Haas will persist with Ayao Komatsu at the helm as the new team principal in 2025. This change will coincide with the departure of drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen, who will be replaced by Ollie Bearman and Esteban Ocon.
